Purpose

To provide professional knowledge and expertise in the administration and support of environmental compliance for the University. Responsible for all overall coordination and implementation of EHS waste programs to ensure compliance with state and federal regulatory agency guidelines and institutional policies.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for hiring, training, management, and supervision of UT and contract hazmat employees handling hazardous waste, regulated medical waste, and other waste materials for the University. Ensure employees are operating safely and following regulatory requirements and internal procedures. Resolve waste management issues and provide guidance to faculty, researchers, staff, and students. Primary contact for waste management projects and for affiliated sites requiring travel.
  • Accounting, record keeping, and state reporting. Ensure accurate records of the collection, storage, and disposal of hazardous waste, regulated medical waste, and other regulated waste materials following all regulatory requirements and internal procedures. Generate and finalize documentation and reports required by federal, state, and local regulators. Responsible for tracking, processing, and verifying all program related expenses and billing.
  • Responsible for the program development for hazmat operations and incident response. Design and conduct training for all levels of employees, principal investigators, and researchers. Develop and implement accident investigation, data analysis, and recurrence prevention programs and procedures. Provide technical review for projects.
  • Designated building manager for the Main, PRC, MSI, and MCD waste buildings and manages the waste rooms for DPI, HDB, and HTB. Must ensure facilities are regulatory compliant and work with facilities to keep up-to-date with preventative maintenance and, as needed, coordinate repairs and renovations for the facilities.
  • Responsible for assigning inspections, monitoring and testing of sites, and the collection of environmental samples to comply with regulatory requirements. Responsible for ensuring compliance of the Industrial and Hazardous Waste, Pollution Prevention Planning, and Tier II Reporting for all UT affiliate sites. Acts as the primary point of contact with regulatory agencies for these areas. Supports other compliance initiatives where needed.
  • Asst with management of on-call and special events and programs including scheduling and the development of written procedures. Assts in the absence of the Associate Director working closely with the Environmental Operations Manager.

Required Qualifications

Bachelors degree in Engineering, Applied or Basic Science, Environmental Science, Industrial Hygiene, or a related field from an accredited academic institution. Six years of professional experience in environmental health and safety programs with experience managing hazardous and regulated waste, or Master's degree with four years' experience. Experience interacting with regulators. Eligible for certification by the Insitute of Hazardous Material Management or Board of Certified Safety Professionals. Licenses: Class "C" Operator's Driver's License. Demonstrates good interpersonal communication skills.

Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications

Masters degree in Engineering, Applied or Basic Science, Environmental Science, Industrial Hygiene, or a related field from an accredited academic institution. Six or more years of professional experience in environmental health and safety programs with a focus on hazardous and regulated waste management in an institution of higher learning and at least two years in a supervisory/management role. Professional licenses or certifications such as CHMM, CSP, HAZWOPER, or DOT/IATA Shipper.

Driving Required

This job requires a class "C" operator's driver's license. The applicant selected must provide a current three year driving record from the current state of residence. If not currently a Texas resident, a Texas driver's license must be obtained within 30 days of becoming a Texas resident.

Salary Range

$82,000 + depending on qualifications
