Company Description

Located in Largo in the heart of Prince George’s County, our new state-of-the-art regional medical center (UM Capital Region Medical Center) will provide improved access to primary and ambulatory care services, and serve as a tertiary care center for critically ill patients. In addition, our new space will allow us to expand our offerings as a community partner to help improve the health status of Prince George’s County residents.

Job Summary

The Pharmacy Coordinator is responsible for overseeing specific areas of pharmacy services, programs and personnel;  is responsible for ensuring safe, timely, efficient, compliant, and productive workflows and care delivery in the service areas of their oversight; will develop, implement, and monitor pharmacy programs, lead pharmacy practice advancement, champion variation reduction efforts, and provide professional development for institutional and departmental team members and other; may be responsible for providing medication therapy management services, both clinical and distributive tasks as necessary, in collaboration with other providers to assure that drug therapy is safe, effective, efficient and cost-effective (Pharmacy services provided may include, but are not limited to, medication distribution, interdisciplinary patient care rounds, medication history oversight, patient education, medication therapy monitoring, medication orders management, drug information, drug dosing, and various scholarly activities); may be responsible for the direct supervision, scheduling, and/or work delegation of any combination of pharmacy technicians, pharmacists, support staff, or pharmacy learner in their service areas of oversight; acts independently within the scope of their license and areas of expertise with the help of general policies, procedures and practice guidelines with support from Pharmacy Leadership; may be required to act in the capacity of another pharmacy leader in their absence or when designated to do so.

The Pharmacy Coordinator is recognized as the expert in own area within the organization; has specialized depth and/or breadth of expertise in own discipline and/or function; interprets internal and external issues and recommends solutions/best practices; solves complex problems and takes a broad perspective to identify solutions; and may lead projects.

Specific responsibilities will be documented and retained internally by the Department of Pharmacy.

Primary Responsibilities

 

The following statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by people assigned to this classification. They are not to be construed as an exhaustive list of all job responsibilities performed.

  • Supports manager and/or supervisor in the coordination of scheduling of staff to provide required pharmacy services and may review workload and workflows and make recommendations
  • Acts as a role model and mentor, provides training to team members, provides daily oversight to operations and/or compliance activities, and supports the pharmacist-in-charge and/or leader with the daily activities of the pharmacy
  • Takes a leadership role in continuous quality improvement efforts and represents the department as an interdisciplinary interface.
  • Ensures compliance with all relevant laws, regulations, and policies
  • May perform some or all of the duties outline below as required by the role or organization  
    • Provides pharmaceutical care to patients including the promotion of optimal drug therapy and safe use of medications. Assesses patient-specific data to evaluate medication needs, verifies medication orders, and oversees the preparation, dispensing, distribution and monitoring of all medications.
    • Collaborates and consults with and provides education to pharmacy and medical staff, nurses, allied health professionals, patients and caregivers. Acts as a preceptor for learners as directed.   
    • Manages care, quality, and costs by engaging in the systematic and continuous process of evaluating and improving the utilization of medications in a patient population in order to enhance the quality, safety, efficiency and cost-effectiveness of the medication use process.   
    • Oversees and directs the work of other pharmacy staff and ensures service standards are met.
    • Participates in and/or provides direct patient care in any setting or capacity.  
    • Supports interdisciplinary rounds, prepares materials, and participates in facility committees, and or implements strategic initiatives.   
    • Takes a leadership role in continuous quality improvement efforts and represents the department as an interdisciplinary interface in the assigned specialty areas.   
    • Contributes to the advancement of the profession through research, publication, and presentation. Participates in the development of drug and disease state-based clinical practice guidelines that influence clinical practice. Assures compliance of prescribers with clinical practice guidelines and other medication policies.  
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education & Experience - Required

  • Doctorate of Pharmacy Required (PharmD) unless graduated from U.S. School of Pharmacy in or before 2003 OR Foreign Equivalent
  • 6 years experience OR PGY-2 Residency / Fellowship OR 3 years experience plus PGY-1 Residency OR 3 years experience plus specialized pharmacy certification
  • Maryland Pharmacist License  

Education & Experience - Preferred

  • Supervisory experience preferred
  • Board Certified preferred

  • Demonstrates effective communication methods and skills, using lines of authority appropriately.   
  • Enhances professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, current literature, workshops, in-service meetings, etc. 
  • Identifies the extent of the health system’s adherence to best practices and guidelines relevant to medication management.  
  • Attends hospital and departmental meetings as required.
  • Utilizes appropriate customer relations skills when interacting with patients, their families, visitors, team members, and others, to ensure all customers are treated with respect and dignity.   
  • Represents the department on hospital committees, professional associates, and community organizations where appropriate. 
  • Participates in the development of policies, procedures, and guidelines pertaining to medication use and management.  
  • Maintains knowledgeability of the daily operations of UMMS, including the Pharmacy Department, through active engagement and awareness of departmental communications via mailbox, bulletin boards, and/or e-mail. 
  • Maintains knowledgeability of the mission, vision, and values of UMMS.  
  • Assists in the coordination of performance improvement activities, policies and procedures.
  • Works collaboratively with pharmacy leadership, nursing, medical and information systems.
  • Evaluates and guides hospital compliance related to regulatory standards specifically concerning pharmacy services and medication management.
  • Utilizes appropriate management skills when interacting with direct reports and employees within and external to the pharmacy department ensuring that all employees are treated with respect and dignity.
  • Management of personnel supporting pharmacy workflow.
  • Evaluate performance of assigned personnel.
  • Coordinate and lead team and staff meetings for assigned areas of responsibility.
  • Work with staff on an ongoing basis to improve performance and attain their professional development goals by directing, coaching and supporting.
  • Monitor the progress of assignments, performance of daily responsibilities, and personnel issues for all assigned team members in a proactive and timely manner providing coaching and corrective action as necessary.
  • Manage labor expenses where appropriate for assigned areas of responsibility.
  • Manage team member compliance with time and attendance policies.
  • Measurement of team member engagement and implementation of improvement initiatives.
  • Participate in the recruitment, interviewing and hiring of professional and technical staff.
  • Staff orientation, training and competency assessment.
  • May serve as a preceptor for pharmacy residents, interns, and students in area of specialty.
  • Coordinate scholarship (posters, presentation, publishing) efforts in all areas of oversight.
  • May act in the capacity of any other member of the pharmacy leadership team if and when designated/required to do so.
