Backstage is seeking a Data Engineer for Customer Data & Analytics with experience in marketplace ecosystems and a passion for transforming raw data into actionable, scalable solutions. You will join our data team, which currently includes two Data Engineers, a Data Scientist, and a Senior Manager, Business Intelligence. The data team is part of the larger Product and Engineering department, which consists of high-performance engineers, designers, product managers, analysts, and quality assurance resources. We value curiosity, trust, and impact, and we foster a culture of constant learning and improvement where teammates work together to accomplish user-focused initiatives in a supportive, democratic, open, and respectful environment. Our teams are experienced, nimble, collaborative and considerate. We go out of our way to make opportunities for everyone to learn and build new skills.

The data team supports seven businesses within TCS, applying a unified data strategy across all of them. Our data engineering efforts are dedicated to strengthening core data assets that drive business decisions, power marketing operations, enable product customization, and make our products smarter for customers. Every month, we bring together all GMs and key cross-functional stakeholders for a data roadmap meeting, where we collaboratively prioritize the most valuable work for the organization. This process ensures that the projects you work on are always high-impact, aligned with current business needs, and built on a data strategy that delivers continuous, reusable value over the long term.

As our Data & Analytics Engineer, you will be working with large-scale, session-level customer and event data to enable user journey analysis, sophisticated attribution modeling, and in-depth behavioral analytics. In this role, you will design and maintain robust data pipelines, harmonize multimodal data into a unified ontological layer, and partner with cross-functional teams to drive data-driven decision-making. Your work will directly enable AI innovation, revenue optimization, and operational excellence. A major component of this role will include tying behavioral and web metrics to revenue and retention.

The Data & Analytics Engineer will report to Backstage’s Senior Manager, Business Intelligence.

What You’ll Do:

  • Build, optimize, and maintain dbt-based data transformation pipelines in Redshift and PostgreSQL to ensure scalability, reliability, and performance

  • Develop and manage data integration pipelines, including reverse ETL workflows, to connect cleaned data to martech tools like Hightouch and drive business activation

  • Work with large-scale, session-level customer and event data to enable user journey analysis, sophisticated attribution modeling, and in-depth behavioral analytics

  • Implement CI/CD practices and version control (e.g., Gitlab) for analytics codebases to ensure reproducibility and collaboration

  • Design, monitor, and continuously improve automated data quality controls, lineage tracking, and documentation to safeguard accuracy and transparency

  • Advocate for software engineering best practices: modular code, unit testing, and clear documentation

  • Partner with product, finance, and marketing teams to translate business opportunities into data model requirements

  • Support the analytical needs of the marketing team by designing and maintaining data models and dashboards that enable campaign measurement, segmentation, and ROI analysis

  • Use BI tools (such as Looker and Tableau) to develop and manage dashboards that transform data into actionable insights for both technical and non-technical stakeholders

  • Deliver data-driven recommendations and insights in compelling, accessible ways that inspire informed business decisions and ongoing stakeholder engagement

  • Stay abreast of emerging analytics technologies, best practices, and regulatory standards—proactively identifying opportunities to raise the bar for data engineering, privacy, and user impact

What we’re looking for from you:

  • 5+ years related experience in data engineering, operations or analytics supporting customer service and/or experience

  • Proven expertise designing and implementing a 360-degree customer view using integrated data from multiple touchpoints (e.g., purchase, web, mobile, and support systems)

  • Familiarity with SaaS KPIs, attribution modeling, web event tracking, and analytics metric structures

  • Ability to build and optimize robust, scalable data pipelines for marketing attribution and customer journey analytics

  • Experience with CI/CD, version control, and DevOps principles as applied to data/analytics environments

  • Hands-on experience working with a modern analytics tech stack (e.g., Looker, Amplitude, dbt, Hightouch, Fivetran, Stitch)

  • Exceptional SQL skills; you are able to transform data using SQL, with a strong preference on experience with dbt

  • Experience with cloud data warehouses (e.g., Snowflake, BigQuery, Redshift)

  • Knowledge of data governance, automatic alerting, dashboard testing, and data quality best practices

  • Awareness of data privacy and compliance best practices (GDPR, CCPA, etc.).

  • Strong cross-functional collaboration skills, partnering effectively with business, product, and engineering teams

  • Empathy and curiosity; you like to understand stakeholders’ needs and derive satisfaction from building dashboards that tell a story

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; ability to distill technical language to technical and non-technical audiences

  • Positive attitude and comfort with collaborating in a remote setting

  • Proactive, autonomous, and organized, with solid time and project management skills
