Career Advancement serves a student population of approximately 7,000 arts and sciences undergraduate students, in addition to alumni who have graduated within the last five years. Career Advancement plays a vital role in ensuring our students’ success after graduation. Career Advancement offers innovative and comprehensive career development services with a focus on pre-professional preparation, experiential education, and opportunities. Through career advising, programs, and comprehensive resources, Career Advancement supports undergraduate students and alumni as they develop the skills necessary to manage their career development, while working with alumni and employers to provide students with meaningful opportunities. Job Summary

The Director, Careers in Social Sciences will have oversight over supporting students interested careers in the social sciences, including government, non-profits, sustainability, human rights, global health, foundations, and think tanks, among others. They will work closely to administer engaging events, create experiential education opportunities and lead career treks. They will also help support broader team goals, including marketing, communications, and leading student professional development cohorts. This team member will also have responsibility for helping to support students more broadly who are interested in the social sciences through generalist career advising and relationship management for key graduate and professional school partners in the social sciences. This includes also developing collateral, presentations, and materials to help students explore social sciences and social impact careers.

This is a multifaceted role that requires an interest and passion in impacting students through employer, stakeholder, and program management. The ideal candidate will be an energetic and engaged individual contribute with an interest in helping students develop their career pathways in a complex, fast-paced environment.

Responsibilities

  • Manages and stewards a portfolio of relationships with employers in global health, government, human rights and policy, including non-profits, foundations, and NGOs to promote student recruitment for internships and full-time opportunities.
  • Manages and administers employer treks. This includes connecting with in-market offices, employers, and alumni to develop and execute trek agendas.
  • Leads day-to-day operations including program planning and execution, budget management and student advising support.
  • Provides project management oversight for Public Policy Leaders Program, Civic Careers Corps.
  • Serves as Global Health and Human Rights program manager, providing advising, career coaching and developing programming opportunities.
  • Collaborates with campus partners on career exploration programs and internship development including the Pozen Center for Human Rights, Center for Global Health, Kiphart Center for Global Health and Social Development and the Harris School of Public Policy.
  • Manages and oversees budgets for cohort programs including Global Health Scholars, Global Health Frontiers, Public Policy Leaders Program and the Pozen Human Rights Internship Program.
  • Works across Careers In Social Science teams to coordinate programs, provide comprehensive student support, and help create and identify external employment opportunities.
  • Develops career-oriented guides for industry-specific knowledge including recruiting guides, web content, presentations, and other content.
  • Analyzes markets and trends as they relate to job searches in the social sciences, social service, and foundations and philanthropy.
  • Supports Career Advancement in developing and maintaining relationships with campus partners and registered student organizations, in particular institutional partners in the social sciences.
  • Conducts job search and career management related large lectures, hands-on workshops, special events, training programs, and one-on-one career coaching sessions. Acts as a resource for and directs students to other career resources as needed.
  • Administers programming designed to increase access to UChicago graduate programs for current students in the College, including standardized deadlines, affinity building events, and graduate school fairs.
  • Advises and counsels students interested in careers in policy, government and the social sciences, utilizing first-hand career knowledge and skills and collaborating with other Career Advancement teams.
  • Maintains efficient methods of tracking student data, quantifying student engagement, and reporting on student outcomes.
  • Develops original content for career related publications and assists with the editing and distribution of Career Services communications materials.
  • Analyzes markets and trends as they relate to job searches. Assesses student feedback and evaluations and collaborates with other career services staff members, student organizations, or other staff to determine program offerings and innovations.
  • Works, with minimal guidance, to write timely and effective articles about career management topics for a variety of student publications. Conceptualizes, develops, and delivers career management programming and published materials.
  • Performs other related work as needed.


Minimum Qualifications

Education:

Minimum requirements include a college or university degree in related field.


Work Experience:

Minimum requirements include knowledge and skills developed through 5-7 years of work experience in a related job discipline.

  • Professional experience working in a business setting.

Technical Skills or Knowledge:

Working Conditions

  • Work evening hours and weekends on an occasional basis, generally 3-5 times per quarter.
  • Travel, generally 2-3 times per year.
