Thorlabs is a dynamically growing company in the Photonics sector designing and manufacturing a broad range of optical components and systems. The Laser Systems and Technology (LST) Business Unit at Thorlabs focuses on developing and manufacturing complex and innovative laser systems such as femtosecond fiber lasers, supercontinuum sources, and low-noise laser systems. We are seeking a highly motivated and energetic photonics engineer to join our LST group located in the Washington D.C. metro area. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in photonics, including hands-on experience with optical fiber components, optical characterization instruments, and laser systems. Additionally, knowledge and hands-on experience with programming languages, particularly for remote instrument control will be a plus. This role involves working closely with our R&D, engineering and manufacturing teams to test photonics devices and systems.
Purpose of the Position: The Photonics Test Engineer will be responsible for designing and building test platforms within production lines, performing tests on R&D systems or components, and collecting test data. The Photonics Test Engineer will be working across many of our key product lines in this mission critical position, supporting various aspects of our operation. This role meets with the larger team regularly and reports progress. Position involves minimal travel (generally less than 10%).
• Support testing activities across both R&D and manufacturing environments for photonic and optical systems.
• Develop and document test procedures for production-level testing.
• Design and implement automated test setups using appropriate software and instrumentation.
• Collect, analyze, and maintain production test data to ensure quality and traceability.
• Assist R&D engineers in executing experiments and collecting data from prototype systems.
• Prepare and organize test results for internal reporting and team collaboration.
• Maintain and troubleshoot test equipment, ensuring calibration and readiness.
• Participate in the assembly and alignment of optical systems or subcomponents as needed to support production or prototyping.
• Follow safety protocols and cleanroom procedures where applicable.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams including engineering, manufacturing, and quality assurance.
Experience:
• Hands-on academic or internship experience with optical systems, lasers, photodetectors, or fiber optics.
Education:
• Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, Physics, Optical Engineering, Photonics, or a related field
Specialized Knowledge and Skills:
Basic understanding of electronic and optical test equipment, such as oscilloscopes, power meters, spectrum analyzers, and laser drivers.
• Familiarity with data acquisition and analysis tools (e.g., Python, MATLAB, LabVIEW, or similar).
• Good hands-on skills, attention to detail, and a methodical approach to troubleshooting.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills, especially in technical environments.
