Technical Program Manager

Tailscale is a fully distributed networking security company building a simpler, safer Internet using modern VPN and zero-trust principles. They are looking for an experienced Technical Program Manager to lead large, cross-functional engineering programs, align stakeholders, and drive measurable outcomes in a remote-first, fast-paced environment.

Skills

  • 5+ years as a Technical Program Manager coordinating large, multi-team technical programs
  • Experience working in startup and fast-paced environments with high ambiguity
  • Networking and security concepts (NAT traversal, DERP, DNS, ACLs) and authentication (SSO, OIDC)
  • Familiarity with WireGuard protocol and Zero Trust networking concepts
  • Ability to dive deep into technical details while maintaining program-level visibility
  • Proven ability to build trust with engineering teams and drive technical change through influence
  • Proficiency with Agile methodologies and tools such as Jira, Notion, and GitHub
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills for asynchronous remote collaboration

Responsibilities

  • Manage large-scale technical programs from inception through delivery across Engineering, Product, and Design
  • Define success criteria, track KPIs, and ensure programs deliver measurable outcomes aligned with strategy
  • Identify process gaps and implement just-right processes to improve visibility, agility, and velocity
  • Coordinate priorities, requirements, and dependencies among engineering, product, support, and GTM teams
  • Establish program governance, anticipate and mitigate risks, and drive resolution through collaboration
  • Run retrospectives, recommend improvements, and implement changes based on feedback and research
  • Support strategic planning including capacity, interrupts, and technical debt planning
  • Manage complex multi-team programs in partnership with external customers

Education

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience preferred
  • Technical degree (CS/Engineering) is advantageous but not required
  • Relevant certifications (PMP, Agile) are a plus
