Software Engineer, Simulation (Starship)

SpaceX is developing the Starship transportation system to enable human life on Mars. The Starship Simulation Software team is seeking motivated software engineers to design and implement high-performance simulation models, build and validate Hardware-in-the-Loop (HITL) testbeds, and develop scalable simulation execution infrastructure to accelerate safe, reliable Starship software development.

Skills

Proficiency in C++, Python, Rust or other systems programming languages
Experience building simulation models and developing HITL or testbed integrations
Familiarity with CI systems, debugging tools, and test automation infrastructure
Understanding of electronics, controls, fluid systems, motor design or physical mechanics
Strong first-principles problem-solving and critical thinking
Excellent written and verbal communication and cross-team collaboration
Ability to work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment and assume high responsibility
Willingness to work long hours and weekends as needed

Responsibilities

Develop and validate Hardware-in-the-Loop (HITL) testbeds in collaboration with Avionics and hardware teams
Design and implement high-fidelity, high-performance simulation models for vehicle subsystems
Build and maintain scalable infrastructure and tooling to execute automated simulation test campaigns
Collaborate with hardware, analysis, and software teams to integrate simulation models into workflows
Adopt and maintain software engineering best practices, code quality, and testing standards
Debug, profile, and optimize simulation and test systems to meet performance and fidelity goals

Education

Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering or other engineering discipline
OR 2+ years of professional software development experience in lieu of a degree

Base salary range: $120,000 - $170,000/year (level and base salary determined case-by-case)
