Position Purpose

The Mobile Optician will provide services on the Glazer Vision Foundation’s Mobile Vision Clinic. The Mobile Optician is responsible for fabricating eyewear in-house by accurately interpreting prescriptions and producing high-quality lenses and glasses. This role includes edging, grinding, polishing, and fitting lenses into frames using specialized ophthalmic equipment.

This is a full-time position which involves managing lens and frame inventory, conducting quality control inspections, performs eyewear adjustments and repairs, and supports patient-facing service as needed. This position plays a critical role in delivering complete, accurate, and timely eyewear solutions from fabrication through final fitting. This role is also responsible for preparing reports and invoices required for grant funding, ensuring that grant deliverables are met and maintaining appropriate communications with the Vision Health Program Manager.

Occasionally the Mobile Optician will assist with the operations of the Youth Vision Program activities in the Tampa Bay area on behalf of Lions World Vision Institute. The program provides services in Hillsborough, Pinellas and Pasco Counties. Youth Vision Program activities include vision screening, glasses fittings, and/or refraction eye exam clinics at schools, community events or other designated locations. The Mobile Optician will report to the Vision Health Program Manager and interface with other members of the LWVI Vision Health team.

Schedule and Travel

The schedule is Monday through Friday, following general office hours with occasional weekends. Position travels throughout respective clinic regions to include Hillsborough County, Pasco County and Pinellas County – all subject to change.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Florida Range $22.70- $26.64
  • Paid time off with a starting maximum of 144.04 hours per year.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Vehicle Operations and Maintenance:

  • Drive, park, and maintain the Mobile Optical Lab vehicle (customized RV) for safe and efficient operation.
  • Perform routine inspections, basic maintenance, and troubleshooting for the vehicle and onboard optical lab equipment.
  • Ensure compliance with vehicle safety regulations, fuel management, and maintenance logs.

Mobile Vision Clinic and Equipment

  • Assist in scheduling and coordinating YVP events.
  • Preparing and setting up the Optical and Optometry areas of the Mobile Clinic event.
  • Ensure all laboratory equipment is operating properly.
  • Responsible for ensuring mobile clinic is always stocked with consumables (cases, lens cloths, exam forms etc.)
  • Following each clinic event; prepare/clean mobile clinic equipment for the next event.

Program Execution

  • Perform vision clinics and all duties in accordance with state requirements and standards.
  • Ensure Lions World Vision Institute processes are followed during the execution of all clinical activities.
  • Ensure all patient and administrative paperwork facilitates an efficient workflow each workday
  • Prepare and maintain Optical equipment and supplies for vision clinics.
  • During clinics, primary responsibility is Opticianry duties, including lens edging, neutralization, fitting, measuring glasses, and final eyewear inspections to ensure quality and accuracy. These responsibilities include assisting patients with frame selection, measuring pupillary distance and ocular cent heights, noting the order on a paper form or in Revolution EHR.
  • Assist with other clinic stations as required so patient flow is not disrupted.
  • With the Vision Health Program Manager, oversee and execute follow up dispensing schedules as related to delivery and fitting of finished glasses.
  • Assist in checking‐in completed glasses orders from the lab and dispensing glasses at community events or coordinate mailing of completed eyewear to clinic participants.

Other Responsibilities

  • Represent Lions World Vision Institute in promoting awareness of good vision care to parents, school children, and school personnel.
  • Assist with other duties as assigned.

Education and Qualifications

  • Experience in frame styling with a strong understanding of proper frame fit by incorporating the patients physical and prescriptive needs to maximize a successful clear vision experience, as well as optimal comfort for the patient.
  • Experience in the process of edging single vision lenses to include all components in this process. This includes but not limited to digital lensometry, frame tracing, blocking lenses and using a 7E computerized edger. (Will be trained on equipment as needed for working on the Glazer Vision Mobile Vision Clinic)
  • Able to take edged lenses and properly mount into plastic or metal frames and finish the process with final inspection of both Rx and cosmetics of finished eyewear.
  • Able to dispense with proper fitting techniques (attention to details for best comfort for our patient) with the ability to use all necessary tools to adjust nose pads and temples.
  • Bachelor of Science or equivalent work experience.
  • Ability to interact with and communicate to school personnel, optometrists, ophthalmologists, volunteers, parents, funders and Lions World Vision Institute staff and management.
  • Exceptional organizational skills including demonstrated abilities in Microsoft Office.
  • Both verbal and written communication skills which lead to clear expectations in coordinating and collaborating across peers, volunteers and external resources.
  • Able and willing to work weekends and evenings as required.
  • Able and willing to work with pre-K, elementary and high school students.
  • Ability to effectively prioritize shifting activities; adaptability to change.
  • Detail oriented and flexible with a frequently changing, fast paced environment while keeping an open mind and pleasant demeanor with coworkers and school staff.
  • Must have a sense of urgency with good time management skills.
  • Be a self-starter and perform work independently.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs for transporting supplies and equipment.
  • Able to pass Level II background check.
  • Spanish speaking helpful.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and maintain a clean driving record in accordance with Lions World Vision Institute policies and insurance requirements.
  • Ability to safely drive, park, and maintain a large vehicle (training provided).
