Description
As a Subtractive Manufacturing Engineering Co-op, you’ll work hands-on in our CNC machining department. This role is ideal for a driven engineering student interested in real-world experience across CNC programming, fixture design, process optimization, and machine operation. You’ll support production, collaborate with skilled machinists and engineers, and play a key part in developing reliable, high-performance manufacturing processes.
Responsibilities
Assist with the creation, simulation, and verification of CNC programs for 3-, 4-, and 5-axis milling and turning centers using hyperMILL, ESPIRIT & Fusion 360.
Support the design and fabrication of workholding and fixturing to improve setup repeatability and minimize cycle time.
Collaborate with machinists on setup, prove-out, and first-article validation.
Contribute to the development and refinement of manufacturing processes, tool paths, and cut strategies for improved quality and efficiency.
Participate in root cause analysis and corrective action for production issues.
Operate CNC machinery as needed to support prototype and production work, including setup, inspection, and basic troubleshooting.
Assist in documenting machining processes, tooling lists, and setup sheets to ensure repeatability.
Support continuous improvement projects related to machine utilization, process capability, and workplace organization (5S).
Support other departments (ex. Quality, Additive Manufacturing, Assembly) as needed based on business demand.
Required Skills & Qualifications
Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Manufacturing, or Industrial Engineering (or a related field).
Familiarity with CNC machining and subtractive manufacturing concepts.
Exposure to CAM software (e.g., ESPIRIT, hyperMILL, Fusion 360, or similar).
Exposure to CAD software (e.g., Fusion 360, Solidworks, or similar).
Basic understanding of G-code and machine setup.
Interest in process development and hands-on problem-solving.
Strong attention to detail, eagerness to learn, and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
Preferred Skills & Qualifications
Experience operating CNC machines (mills or lathes, focus on Heidenhain, Okuma, & Haas CNC controllers).
Knowledge of GD&T and ability to interpret engineering drawings.
Exposure to Lean Manufacturing or Six Sigma principles.
