Was an ER nurse for 7 years, I know the burnout well. I landed a remote utilization management job last year. The pay is about the same, hours are way better, no weekends or holidays
Don’t let it overwhelm you there are actually lots of options! I’m in remote chronic disease telehealth right now. Calls can get repetitive but you really get to help people manage their health. ii love that I don’t come home exhausted and covered in bodily fluids anymore
I do insurance case management from home. It’s not thrilling work, and sometimes you deal with corporate BS, but honestly it’s so much less emotionally draining than bedside. Normal hours, decent pay, and I actually have energy after work
I burned out hard in the ICU and switched to utilization review. Fully remote, M–F. It’s a ton of chart review but zero patient lifting or families yelling at you. Honestly it feels weirdly chill in comparison. Pay is good enough to keep me in scrubs and coffee lol
I’m in telehealth. 100% remote, scheduled calls, normal hours. It’s a pay cut from the floor but I’d never go back way better for mental health
I went into utilization review. It’s corporate as hell but beats the hell out of wiping butts and running codes all night. 9–5, remote, no weekends
I’m doing telephonic case management./ It’s not all roses. it’s still healthcare bureaucracy, but I’d take it over hospital shifts any day
Bedside drained me too—I get it. I moved into utilization review about two years ago. It’s WFH, predictable hours, no physical strain. It can be a little monotonous but honestly that’s what I wanted after the chaos of the floor. Pay isn’t bad either, esp. with experience.
I’m in case management now. Fully remote, M–F business hours. It’s a lot of documentation but no 12-hour shifts or codes. Pay is decent, stress is lower. Highly recommend if bedside is wearing you down.
I switched to telehealth about a year ago after burning out hard at the hospital. Honestly, it’s been a game-changer for me. I do 4 days/week, mostly scheduled video calls with chronic patients. It’s less adrenaline but way more manageable mentally. Pay is a bit less than bedside but I’ll take the sanity trade any day.
i started w/ part-time remote triage calls. it was a good way to test the waters. now I’m in full-time remote education for a clinic group. less chaos, same license.
been in chart review for 6 months. not glamorous but pays decent and i can wear pjs all day 😂 u just need solid documentation skills and patience.
i do telehealth psych support. lotta talking, less charting. flexible hours and no commute = big win for me. but gotta be comfy with just phone/video.
YES i do case management from home now. it’s more computer work and calls but soooo much less burnout. still get to help people, just in a diff way.
I’ve been an RN for 6 years and bedside is draining me. Starting to look into remote roles but it’s kinda overwhelming. Are any of you doing telehealth, case mgmt, utilization review? Do you like it? Curious what’s out there that doesn’t suck your soul out but still pays okay.
