Position Summary

The Full Time Promotores de Salud is responsible for advocating for and providing health education to Spanish dominant immigrant and under/uninsured communities to bridge the gap between their respective communities and the health care system. Build and deepen trust within these communities by identifying, compiling and disseminating resources throughout NYC and Nassau County to connect community members to Planned Parenthood of Greater New York’s health centers and other community-based organizations. Conduct outreach and facilitate group education sessions throughout the Bronx, Queens, and/or other NYC and Nassau County neighborhoods. Make appointments to Planned Parenthood of Greater New York’s brick and mortar health centers as well as mobile health centers and provide patient support during health center visits. Support the Community Engagement Coordinator with building and maintaining partnerships with community leaders, community-based organizations, and local businesses as well as basic program administration as needed. Works collaboratively with other Planned Parenthood of Greater New York departments, such as external affairs and organizing, on other community-based engagement and equity initiatives. This is a full-time position located within New York City and involves travel within the region. 


Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities

Program Support (50%) 

Full time Promotores de Salud will conduct outreach in the Bronx, Queens, and/ or other NYC and Nassau County neighborhoods. 

Support the Community Engagement Coordinator in building partnerships with local businesses, community leaders and community-based organizations.

Conduct outreach and facilitate workshops and other group education activities at various community venues such as community-based organizations, Consulates, laundromats, salons, etc. 

Supports the Community Engagement Coordinator in identifying and developing group education activities using community feedback. 

Successful completion of comprehensive training provided by PPGNY on various sexual and reproductive health topics, outreach, and facilitation skills. 

Attend and report back on community meetings and professional development training sessions as requested by supervisor. 

Assists the Community Engagement Coordinator in partnering with the Clinical Services Department to further develop the Promotores’ role in linking Latinx immigrants to PPGNY’s services and supporting Spanish-speaking patients in PPGNY’s health centers. 

Collaborates with other Community Engagement initiatives. 

Works as a member of the Community Engagement department and maintains high standards of professionalism. Represents the Department at selected internal and external meetings, and consortiums. 

Works effectively with volunteers, trainees and other agency personnel. 

Customer Service Responsibilities (15%) 

Make appointments to PPGNY health centers. 

Provides assistance to patients in the PPGNY health center waiting room and outside mobile health centers, including providing Spanish language support services as needed. 

Administrative Team Support (15%) 

Act as a mentor to Promotores de Salud by assisting with trainings and supporting new Promotores. 

Assists with administrative duties. This may include assisting with outreach and group education planning and scheduling, confirming Promotores events at partner sites, preparing materials for workshops and outreach events, filing, setting up and breaking down special events, assisting the Community Engagement Coordinator with monthly meetings, etc. 

Budgetary/Statistical Support (10%) 

Completes outreach and data collection paperwork in a timely manner. 

Special Projects (10%) 

Performs other educational and experience related duties as required.

Required Qualifications
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish and knowledgeable of Latin American customs and cultural norms. 
  • Well-known in and have strong ties to Latin American communities (i.e. South American, Central American, Mexican, or Caribbean) in the Bronx, Queens, and/or other NYC and Nassau County neighborhoods. 
  • Committed to serving as a leader or role model and empowering the Latin American community. 
  • Familiar with prevailing attitudes toward sexual and reproductive health issues among Latinxs. 
  • Able to empathize with Latinxs and share their values and experiences. 
  • Warm, friendly, patient, outgoing and able to make others feel comfortable and at ease. 
  • Patient, good listener, and open to opinions and values that may be different from their own, without being judgmental. 
  • Interested in learning and teaching others about sexual and reproductive health. 
  • Have strong interpersonal and communication skills (both Spanish and English). 
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite or similar software 
  • Flexible work schedule; mornings, evenings, and weekends on occasion. 
  • Ability to travel around NYC and/or Nassau County. 


Typical Physical Demands
  • Requires prolonged sitting and repetitive tasks including use of a computer. Periodic standing, walking, bending. Requires lifting or moving of up to 25 pounds of programming or event materials. Must be able to occasionally walk up and down stairs. Visual acuity sufficient to perform frequent work on a computer screen and review printed reports and other materials. Requires the ability to hear and to communicate orally with others. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, and filing cabinets, and will require reaching, grasping, pushing and pulling.


Typical Working Conditions
  • This job operates in a professional office environment. Potential exposure to communicable diseases and other conditions in a health center environment. Requires travel to various indoor and outdoor environments to conduct programming or events. Requires flexible schedule and during peak activity periods work in excess of 7.5 hours per day and/or 37.5 hours per week.


$23.35 - $23.35 an hour

All positions at PPGNY require:

Proof of immunization or immunity to certain communicable diseases (including influenza during the flu season and Covid-19) and testing for tuberculosis. These certifications are required by the NYC DOHMH Health Code, NYSDOH and OSHA.
