Provides apprenticeship experience along with financial support. This apprenticeship complements formal instruction offered in the graduate program and gives the student practical, personal experience that can be gained only by performing research activities. It is expected that graduate associate responsibilities will not interfere with a student's reasonable progress toward completion of the graduate degree. Specific responsibilities may include applying and mastering research concepts, practices, or methods of scholarship; conducting experiments; organizing or analyzing data; writing reports; presenting findings; collaborating with others in preparing publications; and conducting institutional research for an academic or administrative unit.
The Graduate program in English seeks a Diverse Pathways Graduate Research Associate to provide substantial assistance with the following tasks:
Forge Alumni Connections:
In collaboration with the DGS and the Grad Program Coordinator, and drawing on data made available from the Graduate School, the Diverse Pathways GRA will make new connections with PhD program alumni pursuing academic and non-academic careers. The GRA will help establish an informal network of alumni who have followed diverse career paths and are willing to advise career-seeking graduate students. The GRA will also solicit sample job materials from alumni—resumes, etc.—to complement the sample materials available to academic jobseekers.
Development and Implementation of Professional Development Opportunities: Brainstorm and help design new professional development opportunities for the graduate program. Work with the DGS, grad program coordinator, other faculty, ASC Career Success, alumni, and other stakeholders to design programming that will expose grad students to various career pathways and allow them to think about how cross-disciplinary skills and insights can be leveraged in a non- academic career search. Survey current students to design training that will be useful and appealing. In summer 2026, help DGS and program coordinator plan annual Orientation + Launch event.
Make Diverse Range of Careers Visible: The Diverse Pathways GRA will help roll out promotional materials as well as communication strategies for making careers outside of academia more visible to current students. After interviewing alumni, the GRA will write short biosketches for our website. (These sketches will be vital supplements to the career statistics on our current webpage). The GRA will also produce slides or newsletter items that can be shared with stakeholders in the department. There is a real opportunity for creativity on this front.
Collaboration with other Departments: Most careers do not reflect the disciplinary specializations that organizes the academy—indeed, careers are inherently cross-disciplinary. The Diverse Pathways GRA will be charged with tracking developments in other departments and forging collaborative opportunities. For instance, the GRA might contribute to an Arts & Humanities Jobs List, and plan alumni roundtables in collaboration with other departments. The GRA will help coordinate and advance interdepartmental initiatives like this.
Qualifications: the ideal candidate will be a collaborative and detail-oriented graduate student in English who is diplomatic and a strong writer in multiple genres. This candidate should also have a knack for project management, event planning, and program development.
Final candidates are subject to successful completion of a background check. A drug screen or physical may be required during the post offer process.
