First Second, an imprint of Macmillan Children’s Publishing Group, is a leading publisher of graphic novels for the children’s market, with a bestselling and award-winning list spanning a wide range of genres, age categories, and artistic styles.

We are seeking a hard-working, collaborative, and thoughtful Associate Editor/Editor (depending on experience) to join our team. Our ideal candidate will have prior experience working on graphic novels, a strong commercial editorial eye, and an enthusiasm for visual storytelling. This is a mid-level role suited to someone eager to contribute to the publishing goals of the imprint.

What you'll do:

  • Acquire, develop, and edit graphic novels for the children’s market across a range of genres and age categories
  • Partner with the Editorial Director on selected titles
  • Collaborate closely with authors, illustrators, agents, and internal teams throughout the publishing process
  • Manage project timelines, budgets, and schedules in coordination with design and managing editorial
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with a broad range of agents
  • Stay current on trends in the graphic novel market and identify new opportunities

What you'll bring:

  • Excellent editorial judgment, communication, and organizational skills
  • A strong understanding of graphic novels and visual storytelling mechanics
  • The ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and meet deadlines
  • A collegial, team-oriented attitude and a willingness to pitch in where needed
  • Excellent communication skills

Ideal Experience:

  • At least 3 years of editorial experience in, ideally including work on graphic novels
  • Proven experience guiding books from acquisition through publication
  • Familiarity with the children’s, middle grade, and YA trade publishing landscape

This role will have an annual salary of $60,000-$75,000 (depending on experience and level hired).
