Staff/Principal DevOps Engineer (HHS)

This role offers the opportunity to lead the design, implementation, and management of scalable, secure, and reliable infrastructure for government-focused digital services. You will work closely with software engineers throughout the development lifecycle to ensure systems are highly available, compliant, and automated. The position involves implementing CI/CD pipelines, security practices, and monitoring solutions that directly impact service quality and user experience. It provides the chance to contribute to public-interest technology projects, influence infrastructure best practices, and collaborate in a fully remote, mission-driven environment.

Accountabilities

·         Design, build, and maintain cloud-based infrastructure to support web applications in languages such as Ruby, Python, Java, and Node.js.

·         Develop and manage CI/CD pipelines, automation scripts, and deployment processes to ensure reliable, repeatable releases.

·         Apply security and privacy best practices, conduct risk analyses, and implement remediations for identified vulnerabilities.

·         Monitor system performance, instrument applications for observability, and maintain auditability and compliance standards.

·         Select and implement appropriate tools, frameworks, and technologies, with a preference for open-source solutions.

·         Collaborate with software engineers to integrate infrastructure as code, standardize processes, and improve operational efficiency.

·         Support cross-functional teams to deliver continuous value to users and the organization.

·         Proven experience working with modern software development practices and the DevOps lifecycle.

·         Expertise in cloud-based systems, ensuring availability, reliability, and resiliency of interconnected infrastructure.

·         Experience designing, implementing, and maintaining CI/CD pipelines for multiple environments.

·         Knowledge of security best practices, vulnerability mitigation, and compliance requirements for government services.

·         Proficiency in infrastructure as code, automation frameworks, and system monitoring tools.

·         Ability to work effectively in a professional services environment and communicate with clients and stakeholders.

·         Passion for improving public outcomes through technology and adherence to core organizational values.

·         Nice-to-have: prior experience in civic tech, remote team collaboration, or government contracting environments.

·         Must be legally authorized to work in the U.S.; some roles may require public trust or security clearance.

·         Competitive salary based on experience and seniority: Staff DevOps Engineer ($170,000–$203,000), Principal DevOps Engineer ($180,000–$230,000).
