News Applications Developer (Remote - US)

You will design and develop dynamic news applications and databases that uncover trends, expose inequities, and provide actionable insights for the public. Working with a collaborative newsroom team, you will transform complex datasets into clear, engaging visual narratives and interactive tools. The position offers a chance to influence investigative journalism through technology, tackle ambitious projects, and make a measurable impact on public understanding and accountability.

Accountabilities

In this role, you will:

·         Pitch, design, and develop interactive stories and data-driven applications.

·         Collect, clean, and analyze public and proprietary datasets, including FOIA requests and web scraping.

·         Collaborate with reporters and editors to transform investigative findings into interactive visualizations.

·         Contribute to backend and frontend development, leveraging technologies such as HTML, CSS, JavaScript (D3.js, Svelte), Python, Ruby, SQL, or R.

·         Ensure clarity, usability, and impact in all interactive outputs through thoughtful design and testing.

·         Mentor and provide guidance to colleagues on interactive storytelling and project execution.

·         Manage multiple projects concurrently while maintaining organization, focus, and high-quality results.

The ideal candidate will have:

·         Minimum of 3 years designing and developing interactive graphics, databases, or news applications from scratch.

·         Journalism experience, ideally covering investigative topics, marginalized communities, or public interest stories.

·         Fluency in web development technologies (HTML/CSS, JavaScript frameworks) and familiarity with backend programming (Python, Ruby).

·         Strong data skills, including collection, cleaning, analysis, and visualization using tools like Python, SQL, or R.

·         Understanding of design principles for clarity, usability, and audience impact.

·         Experience or willingness to mentor colleagues and provide constructive feedback.

·         Special expertise in areas like cartography, quantitative methods, database development, user testing, or public records research.

·         Ability to work independently and collaboratively, with excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.

·         Flexibility to travel for assignments, training, or meetings as required.

This position offers:

·         Competitive salary in the range of $105,000–$140,000 USD, based on experience and location.
