Senior Communications Officer - (Digital Content Editor) - Contractual (COMPD)

The Communications Department (COM) is the IMF’s center for strategic communication. It develops and coordinates the IMF’s external and internal communications strategy, shapes key messages, advises IMF Management and staff on how best to convey those messages, and monitors and responds to what is being said and written about the institution and its activity.

COM’s Publishing Division (COMPD) produces a wide range of publications, manages the IMF’s public website (IMF.org) and digital online library (eLibrary.IMF.org), and oversees marketing and distribution of IMF metadata and content through various digital platforms and scholarly and commercial publishing channels.  Fund publications and digital content are aligned with strategic institutional priorities and support the Fund’s larger outreach efforts. Working closely with staff in other departments, the division helps to promote knowledge sharing with both internal and external audiences, including for the preparation, release, and supporting outreach of publications and online content under tight deadlines. COMPD also tracks distribution and use of IMF publications and online content in various digital and print formats.

Duties and Responsibilities

We are seeking an experienced Senior Web Content Editor to lead the strategy, creation, and governance of web content across the IMF’s digital platforms, primarily IMF.org. This role ensures that all content is accurate, engaging, accessible, and aligned with institutional priorities and brand standards. The position requires a blend of editorial expertise, digital publishing skills, and strategic thinking to optimize user experience and drive audience engagement.

Under the general supervision of the Publishing Division’s managers, the successful candidate will be responsible for the following activities, working in collaboration with others in the division and the Communications Department, with colleagues throughout the institution, and with IMF vendors.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Content Strategy & Governance

    • Develop and implement a web content strategy that supports institutional priorities and enhances user experience.

    • Establish and enforce web editorial standards, style guidelines, and accessibility compliance (e.g., WCAG, Section 508).

  • Content Creation & Editing

    • Oversee the creation, editing, and optimization of web content, ensuring clarity, accuracy, and consistency in tone and style.

    • Apply SEO best practices to improve search visibility and engagement.

  • Digital Publishing & Workflow Management

    • Manage content workflows in CMS platforms (e.g., Sitecore), including version control, approvals, and publishing schedules.

    • Coordinate with IT and design teams to ensure technical accuracy and visual appeal of web pages.

  • Collaboration & Leadership

    • Mentor junior editors and collaborate with cross-functional teams (communications, marketing, IT, and external vendors).

    • Serve as the primary point of contact for web content governance and digital publishing best practices.

The successful candidate will also have the opportunity to contribute to other divisional and departmental initiatives, outside of their core responsibilities.

Qualifications

  • An advanced university degree (or equivalent) in communications, international relations, languages, or a related field is required, along with at least eight (8) years of experience in web-focused roles is required; or, a university degree, or equivalent, and fourteen (14) years of relevant professional experience is required. This experience should include a strong background in program management and content strategy/editing, with progressively advanced responsibilities.  

  • Strong writing and editing skills, with a proven ability to craft clear, high-impact communication products for diverse platforms and audiences, and experience working in an institutional, academic, or commercial publishing environment.

  • Strong project management skills, including the ability to monitor project schedules and scope, manage budgets, and coordinate the work of project teams and resources.

  • Knowledge of digital systems, and external platforms, including metadata and web-publishing environments.

  • Demonstrated negotiating and influencing skills with experience in managing relationships with authoring departments.

  • Ability to manage multiple projects and competing deadlines effectively.

  • Comprehensive understanding of the Fund’s mission and priorities, and of the publishing program’s role in enhancing the institution’s effectiveness by disseminating IMF policy advice, research, data, and analysis to the public.

  • Exceptional organizational and planning skills, with a strong results orientation and the ability to work independently and as part of a high performing team.

This is a one-year contractual appointment. Contractual appointments at the IMF are renewable for up to four years of cumulative contractual service, pending incumbent's performance, budget availability, and continuous business need.
