HMS MEDscience’s mission is to inspire and empower a rising generation of STEM leaders. Our program immerses students in realistic and dynamic simulated medical emergencies that transform the way that students approach and solve problems. Our program immerses students in realistic and dynamic simulated medical emergencies that promote teamwork and problem- solving skills. HMS MEDscience engages over 4,000 high school students (including nearly 1,200 Boston Public School students) through school-year and summer programs.

Job Description

HMS MEDscience has an opening for an experienced team teacher for its high school biology-based enrichment program serving a diverse population including Boston area students. This position will directly support the work that advances the goals and vision of HMS MEDscience (http://hmsmedscience.org/mission). 

The MEDscience Teacher & Communications Coordinator role is for an individual who is interested in teaching in our unique pedagogy. Our medical simulations require teachers to take on the roles of instructor, attending physician, patient, and/or counselor to students as they diagnose patients. 

The clinical skills in the MEDscience curriculum requires teachers to be able to work with a variety of medical simulation equipment and communicate proper technique to students. The teacher must be able to create a welcoming space for students with varying educational needs. 

This role will focus primarily on MEDscience's clinical program but may have the opportunity to teach other program areas (including laboratory science, forensic science, and biomedical engineering) over time. This individual will also support the growth of MEDscience by coordinating the organization’s external communications, with a particular focus on social media.

Key Responsibilities:  

Lead Teacher: 

  • Delivers interactive lectures, simulation cases, and debriefs that utilize innovative and unique pedagogy techniques aligned with program goals of critical thinking, problem solving, building teamwork, communication skills, developing personal health literacy, and continued interest in STEM fields.Teach in a co-teaching team delivering interactive sessions.
  • Collaborates with the MEDscience team to deliver semester-long and module programming throughout the school-year and across 10 week-long summer programs. 
  • Instructs students in medical skills, terminology, and scientific literacy (training provided).
  • Works with other lead teachers to develop and refine curriculum.
  • Provides feedback and supports training of less experienced teachers.
  • Responsible for coordinating volunteers and supporting general program operations, including set-up/breakdown of simulation and clinical skills equipment.

Communications Coordinator: 

  • Curates and implements HMS MEDscience’s social media platforms; identify and develop digital content and storytelling opportunities.
  • Refines and manages social media calendar.
  • Works with organization leadership to create cohesive messaging and visual assets that advance mission and align with MEDscience brand and design standard.
  • Takes photographs for social posts and coordinate with teachers, volunteers, and interns to collect and edit photos.
  • Develops written and graphic content for key external communications, including annual appeal, which goes out to 5,000+ households each winter.

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to teach 3-4 in-person sessions each day (75 minutes/session).
  • Requires assisting in set-up of simulation equipment and clinical skills training, which can include lifting and carrying objects of moderate weight.

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience required.
  • Minimum of 3 years of relevant experience.


Additional Qualifications and Skills:

  • 2+ years of teaching experience preferred.
  • Social media experience preferred.
  • College-level understanding of biology and anatomy and physiology.
  • Must be flexible and have strong project management skills to effectively handle multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment with competing deadlines.
  • Must have strong writing, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Must possess sound judgement and know when to elevate issues to organization’s senior leadership.
  • Experience in or open to training on the following lab techniques: ELISA, PCR, gel electrophoresis.
  • Familiarity with photography, photo editing, graphic design, audio/video editing is a plus. The ideal candidate will have experience with relevant applications, including: Instagram, Facebook, Meta business platform, LinkedIn, X, Canva, Google Suite.

This position is based on-site at a Harvard campus location. Additional details will be discussed during the interview process. Certain visa types may limit work location. Individuals must meet work location sponsorship requirements prior to employment.
