Skills
- Deep knowledge of viroid genome structure, replication, movement, and host interactions.
- Proficiency with molecular cloning and plant RNA biology techniques.
- Experience with RNA secondary structure modeling/prediction and computational tools.
- Experience running greenhouse and small-plot field infection studies and scaling vector production.
- Strong scientific writing, data presentation, and record-keeping skills.
Responsibilities
- Design engineered plant viroids using RNA secondary structure and computational predictions.
- Screen and evaluate engineered viroids in plant systems (greenhouse and small-plot field studies).
- Develop, document, and run end-to-end viroid protocols (cloning, inoculation, titering, phenotyping, expression analysis, data capture).
- Deliver data-driven recommendations to identify field-ready vectors for the product pipeline.
- Hand off optimized vectors and data packages for greenhouse and field trials, supporting regulatory and commercialization efforts.
- Serve as internal and external subject-matter expert on plant viroids and shape platform strategy.
- Coach and mentor research associates and contribute to a collaborative, fast-paced startup culture.
Education
- Ph.D. in Virology, Plant Pathology, Plant Science, Molecular Biology, or related field (preferred) plus 5+ years relevant experience.
- M.S. in related field with 12+ years of relevant industry or lab experience (alternative).
