Senior Staff Backend Engineer - Discovery AI Infrastructure & Enablement
Skills
- Strong fundamentals in distributed systems, low-latency serving, and high-throughput architectures.
- Hands-on experience with search and vector frameworks (Elasticsearch, Lucene, FAISS, Vespa, Milvus, Weaviate).
- Expertise in search indexing, retrieval, embeddings, query rewriting, personalization, and ranking pipelines.
- Experience integrating ML and LLM model serving into production (TF Serving, TorchServe, Ray Serve, etc.).
- Proficiency in at least one backend language: Java, Kotlin, Go, or Python; plus familiarity with streaming/storage (Kafka, Flink, Spark).
- Strong communication, technical leadership, and cross-team collaboration skills.
Responsibilities
- Design, build, and optimize search and AI infrastructure (semantic search, vector retrieval, embeddings) to serve personalized results with low latency.
- Lead productionization of natural language search, retrieval, and multi-stage ranking pipelines including query understanding and re-ranking.
- Integrate LLMs, semantic models, and agentic features into discovery flows and ensure efficient model serving and orchestration.
- Drive technical strategy for applied AI across search and discovery; collaborate with Data Scientists, ML Engineers, and Product Managers.
- Improve retrieval efficiency, index tuning, and latency/cost trade-offs at scale; own monitoring, testing, and reliability for serving systems.
- Mentor engineers, review designs and code, and lead cross-functional initiatives to deploy experiments and iterate based on metrics.
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering or related field, or equivalent practical experience.
- Advanced degree (MS/PhD) in CS, ML, or related discipline is a plus but not required.
