Title: Senior Engineer - AI
Location: Boston, MA
Reporting Structure: This role reports to the Head of Product & Engineering
Company Description
CivilGrid is a venture-backed SaaS construction tech company building the "Google Maps for the Underground." Come help us disrupt a $4.7T US industry segment that desperately needs innovation. This opportunity has tremendous upside as it scales.
CivilGrid aggregates public and proprietary utility, geotechnical, environmental, and jurisdictional data. The consolidated information is sold via our collaborative SaaS mapping platform to engineers and developers who need it to make early-stage decisions on real estate and infrastructure projects. Real time data access reduces labor and project delays, accelerates decision making and reduces project risk. Collaborative features ensure faster information flow and decisioning inside and outside the organization and better project insight retention over time.
Responsibilities
As a small team, we all wear many hats and enjoy tackling new challenges. When it comes to tech, we're seeking experienced individuals who can efficiently identify problems and devise solutions. You will be a foundational team member with the opportunity to work on all aspects of the application and shape the technical future of CivilGrid. Joining at this stage, you will build core systems that will help us scale quickly, and benefit from tremendous upside as we grow. While we don't expect you to be an expert of our tech stack, a strong understanding of JavaScript fundamentals alongside prior experience in AI (predictive mapping or anomaly detection) is required.
You will be responsible for:
Lead backend services that integrate AI into CivilGrid's geospatial platform.
Develop and optimize pipelines for ingestion, processing, and versioning of large-scale site data.
Build scalable APIs and tools for geospatial operations and visualizations (interactive maps, overlays, shapefile handling).
Strengthen platform security posture (aligned with SOC 2), including infrastructure resilience, logging, and access policies.
Collaborate with product leaders to prioritize technical scope and refine user workflows; translate product goals into system architecture and reliable feature delivery.
Support junior engineers, facilitate knowledge-sharing, and champion code quality, best practices, and shared ownership.
Ensure platform performance at scale; monitor metrics and maintain reliability, accuracy, and responsiveness.
Is this you?
5+ years in full-stack/backend engineering, ideally within GIS or construction-tech.
Experience with AI/ML tooling and integration into user-focused products.
Strong backend skills: Python, Node.js, Go, or similar languages; REST/GraphQL APIs.
Familiarity with geospatial frameworks (PostGIS, GeoJSON, map rendering libraries, etc.) is a plus.
DevOps competence: CI/CD, cloud architecture, containerization (Docker, Kubernetes).
Effective communicator, with collaborative experience in product-centric environments.
Must be authorized to work in the United States
Bonus: Prior exposure to pre-construction or civil engineering workflows.
