The Problems You’ll Solve
The Community Programs Manager will oversee initiatives aimed at enhancing local volunteerism and civic engagement by providing support to community groups, such as block associations, community gardens, and tenant associations. This role is responsible for managing the Love Your Block grant program, which funds community groups that involve volunteers in revitalization efforts across all five boroughs. The Community Programs Manager will build relationships with a network of community organizations, coordinate with City agencies to assist grantees, and gather feedback from New Yorkers regarding access to services and volunteer opportunities. This feedback will help inform the strategies of NYC Service’s community engagement team. The Community Programs Manager may supervise interns.
Lead responsibilities include:
Community Engagement and Outreach – 40% of the role:
- Lead communications to community group stakeholders and manage stakeholder relationships.
- Research and proactively grow a network of community groups (including block associations, community gardens, etc.) to deepen NYC Service’s engagement in identified communities (i.e.
TRIE neighborhoods and accomplish various goals, including):
o Provide support to volunteer-run community organizations in the five boroughs;
o Serve as a resource for NYC residents who want to develop their community group and;
o Increase the number and diversity of NYC Service’s community group partners.
- Coordinate and regularly attend community outreach events - including but not limited to: community board meetings, faith-based organizations, and other hyper-local outreach opportunities identified by the Community Programs Manager.
- Coordinate an annual NYC Service community event and prioritize attendance from community groups to promote NYC Service programs and services.
- Support and co-lead the internal outreach committee by organizing across teams and ensuring there are strong internal systems and coordinated efforts.
- Solicit and collect feedback from NYC communities about volunteerism, civic engagement infrastructure, and access to service opportunities to inform the overall strategy of NYC Service’s community engagement team.
- Promote NYC Service website registration, office-wide programs, and city resources.
Host community group trainings and convenings – 20% of role:
- Build out NYC Service’s community group network, including holding regular convenings for community groups with a focus on volunteerism.
- Plan and execute workshops and training for community groups in NYC Service’s network to build capacity for volunteer-run groups in the five boroughs.
Grant Management – 40% of role:
- Manage the Love Your Block (LYB) micro-funding grant program, to ensure NYC Service is supporting diverse neighborhoods across the city and providing effective support to engage community members in their efforts.
o Create promotional materials for the LYB program to increase awareness and applications.
o Promote the LYB application to community groups, including coordinating multi-lingual outreach.
o Manage application support and selection process.
o Conduct orientation, mid-program site visits, and an end-of-funding summit for community groups to assess progress and provide technical support and coaching.
o Provide technical assistance to LYB grantees to ensure their success in the program.
o Coordinate with City agencies to provide resources for Love Your Block participants and ensure their success in the program.
o Collect data and write an end-of-funding report detailing the successes, outcomes, and challenges of the cohort.
Cross-office collaboration:
- As a manager, contribute to the NYC Service management team’s discussions regarding internal practices, budget management, and strategic planning.
- Work across NYC Service teams to build and implement a strategy for NYC Service’s annual.
- reports and meetings, increasing opportunities for community groups to connect with NYC Service resources, training, and initiatives.
- Support citywide events sponsored by NYC Service and represent NYC Service at Mayoral and interagency community events.
Advance NYC Service mission, values, and goals, including, but not limited to:
- Represent NYC Service at select events and support all-staff events, as needed.
- Be available on select evenings and weekends, as needed.
- Support City initiatives as needed.
About You
- You have excellent writing, public speaking, and interpersonal skills.
- You have a strong track record of time management, priority setting, problem-solving, research, and analytical skills.
- You can take initiative, prioritize duties, work independently and within a team environment, pay close attention to detail, meet deadlines, manage appropriate follow-up, work well under pressure, and maintain an enthusiastic work ethic. This includes being flexible and embracing different work styles.
- You have knowledge of City agencies, departments, and methods of inter-agency coordination.
- You have experience with Salesforce, MS Office, and survey tools.
Special Assistant (MA)-MGRL - 0668A
- You have graduated from an accredited college with a baccalaureate degree and a minimum of 3-5 years in program development and management.
- You have experience working with community groups and organizing events and workshops for community members.
- You have experience with program administration and coordination, which includes developing data systems and analytical processes to drive program decision-making, coordinating and managing events, and partner management.
