Position Summary

This intern position is within the Drug Product Development (DPD) department. DPD develops novel formulation, processes, and medical devices to enable drug products at clinical and commercial stages. This role offers a unique opportunity to leverage state-of-the-art predictive modeling and data science techniques to advance the science of drug development, contributing directly to improving patient lives. You will collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, using data analytics, AI/ML models, and computational techniques to drive insights and innovation across therapeutic areas. We are looking for candidates who are highly motivated and self-driven, have demonstrated innovative problem-solving ability and the ability to work independently as well as in a team environment. We are asking for experience in one or more of: computational modeling (e.g., fluid dynamics, discrete element modeling, or other similar techniques), machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence (AI) applied to large datasets, pharmaceutical unit operations for parenteral or oral solid dosage forms, or medical device applications.

Summer interns will work with mentors for ~10 weeks on a guided research project within a PD Project Team. The program is organized to ensure that interns gain valuable industry and functional experience, work on challenging assignments, learn about BMS and meet diverse company representatives.

Program Dates:  Monday June 1, 2026 - Friday, August 7, 2026. Applications are currently being accepted and may be selected on a rolling basis. Those selected will be notified no later than February 2026. Position is in New Brunswick, NJ.

The starting hourly compensation for this assignment is $43.00/hr. Please note that the final individual compensation and any applicable benefits will be determined by your employer of record (and not BMS). Factors influencing this decision may include the characteristics of the assignment, such as demonstrated experience, required skill, and the geographic location of the job. Compensation details are subject to change. Interns that will be in-person and reside more than 50 miles away from the work location are eligible for a travel or housing stipend.

The program will feature:

  • An orientation, including an overview of company structure, products and brands

  • An introduction to the GPS and PD organizations

  • Exposure to senior management and business leaders

  • Formal presentation at the end of your internship

  • Regular discussion of project progress with multiple mentors

  • Formal review and feedback sessions

Key Responsibilities

The intern will have the opportunity to contribute to one or more of the following areas, depending on their experience and interests:

  • Contribute to drug product development projects by designing and implementing computational models that analyze the effects of process variables and material properties on product attributes.

  • Apply machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence (AI) techniques to large datasets, driving insights for decision-making and mitigating product-related risks.

  • Develop and test predictive models that enhance our understanding of key pharmaceutical unit operations for both oral solid and parenteral dosage forms, including drug delivery devices.

  • Collaborate with formulation, process development, and device engineering teams to improve product performance through data-driven insights.

  • Communicate and present results at internal forums. Present scientific results to a diverse audience through data analysis and visualizations.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Candidates must be currently enrolled in an accredited university program seeking a Ph.D. in engineering, materials science, computational sciences, or a related quantitative discipline.

  • Candidates are expected to graduate between Fall 2026 and end of 2027.

  • Must include GPA on resume (program requires GPA of 3.0 or greater) and a summary of their current research, not exceeding two pages, for consideration.

  • Demonstrated experience in computational modeling and/or data science, applied to engineering or pharmaceutical challenges.

  • Experience in one or more programming languages such as Python, MATLAB, R, or similar, with an emphasis on data analysis and modeling is preferred.

  • Experience developing and/or implementing test methods to produce data inputs for computational modeling is preferred.

  • Knowledge of drug product development processes and pharmaceutical unit operations and/or medical devices is preferred.

  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to present technical information to both scientific and non-technical audiences.

  • Ability to solve problems independently with minimal guidance.

  • Must be able to work effectively in a collaborative, multidisciplinary team environment, demonstrating strong interpersonal and communication skills.
