Overview

The Librarian oversees operations of the Learning Commons within the Student Success Center on the Beloit-Janesville Campus. Within the Teaching and Learning Resources Division, the Librarian serves as a key resource for faculty initiatives around the adoption of Open Educational Resources (OER). The Librarian ensures online and physical access to information resources (LibGuides), library services, and a welcoming space for students to study and practice skills vital to academic success.

Responsibilities

Library Collection Organization, Development and Access

  • Responsible for the acquisition, organization, and processing of all library materials.
  • Oversee collection development and maintenance of library resources and support services, including purchasing resources and subscriptions appropriate to the needs of the academic community and weeding outdated or otherwise irrelevant resources from the collection on an ongoing basis.
  • Solicit faculty/staff input to identify library material supportive of specific courses, programs, or college initiatives and activities.
  • Catalog library materials ensuring high-quality metadata and seamless access across platforms.
  • Maintain accurate usage data for resources and support provided; utilize a data-informed approach to continuously improve resources and support.
  • Work with vendors to initiate or renew contracts and troubleshoot technical issues for users.
  • Ensure students and faculty are consistently able to access all online library materials.
  • Conduct occasional visits to the BTC Monroe Campus to ensure the resources on site are maintained and staff have an accurate knowledge of available resources and applicable processes for using them.
  • Process inter-library loan requests and arrange the orderly transfer of library materials from one location to another as necessary.
  • Organize library resources to comply with accessibility requirements.
  • Maintain current knowledge of in-field best practices regarding the collection and development of learning materials.
  •  Student Support

  • Develop and maintain virtual Library resources for students (such as LibGuides, information literacy modules in Blackboard, and tutorial videos on accessing and using databases).
  • Proactively promote appropriate Library resources to students to ensure student awareness of available resources and support (especially among new students).
  • Recommend resources to students and provide instruction in the use of databases and reference materials.
  • Respond to student inquiries over the phone, in person, in chat, and via email in a timely and professional manner.
  • Assist students with reference questions and building information literacy skills.
  • Work with students to successfully complete course assignments, especially those requiring research.
  •  Faculty and Staff Support

  • Respond to faculty and staff requests to identify and/or purchase library materials relevant to curriculum in a timely manner.
  • Serve as a checkpoint in the course development process, including assisting faculty with researching and adopting OERs.
  • Assist faculty with subject-specific bibliographies.
  • Design, plan, deliver, and assess information literacy workshops.
  • Serve as the primary support at the circulation desk.
  • Recruit and oversee a team of student workers to assist in staffing the circulation desk.
  • Student Success Center Support

  • Collaborate as a member of the Teaching & Learning Resources team to support student learning and faculty excellence in the Student Success Center.
  • Attend departmental meetings to represent the Library and Learning Commons to ensure effective communication about learning resources with faculty and staff across the college.
  • Organize Library events to support student learning and provide academic support as appropriate to the academic calendar.
  • Collaborate with IT Services to facilitate the check-out of college laptops and hotspots from the Student Success Center.
  • Other Duties

  • Prepare and submit the library portion of the college’s annual IPEDS report.
  • Support the library portion of programmatic and institutional accreditation requirements.
  • Participate on college-wide committees and teams in support of the college’s strategic plan, mission and vision.
  • Stay current in library best practices by engaging with professional organizations through conference attendance and other continuing education opportunities (i.e. ALA, WLA, ACRL).
  • Build strong relationships with other academic libraries in Wisconsin.
  • Qualifications

    Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Demonstrate a high level of initiative and ownership over the Library and related resources.
  • Strong presentation, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Willingness to collaborate with a myriad of departments and staff members in support of student learning.
  • Willingness to explore new ideas in support of the learning commons mission and vision.
  • Ability to maintain accurate usage statistics, analyze information and data, and write reports.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues, faculty members, and staff.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with diverse individuals.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office software.
  • Knowledge of, and ability to use, online academic database and Internet resources, as well as traditional print sources.
  • Knowledge of best practices in teaching information literacy skills.

    Education & Experience:

  • Master’s degree in Library and Information Science (or an equivalent degree) from a program accredited by the American Library Association.
  • Two years of academic library experience.
  • Experience designing and teaching information literacy workshops.
  •  

    Preferred:

  • Experience working with community college students and/or faculty.
  • Experience working with WISPALS or the WTCS system.
  • Familiarity with OCLC’s Worldshare Management ILS and LibGuides.
  • Engagement in professional library organizations.
  • Familiarity with Open Educational Resources.
  • Blackhawk Technical College does not offer H-1B or other work authorization visa sponsorship for this position. Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States at the time of hire and maintain work authorization throughout the employment term.
