This position is a Sunday – Thursday early afternoon/evening shift position and the person in this role must have the capacity to work during the day when the college is not in session. Barret Library is the home of the Information Services department, which is a union of library services, information technology services, and instructional technology under Academic Affairs. The Public, Research, and Technology Services Librarian is a bridging role that reports to the Assistant Director of User Engagement and Experience. This position oversees the provision of all circulation services components and will provide assistance in several areas of the Barret library. This will include academic research and first-tier IT support. The person in this role will be an advocate of the goals and initiatives of the services of Barret Library.
Required Education:
Master’s degree required; Master of Library Science (MLS) or Master of Library and Information Science (MLIS) from an American Library Association (ALA) accredited program is preferred. An equivalent, relevant advanced degree is also acceptable.
Required Qualifications:
3 years of library experience required, preferably in an academic setting or two years of public service experience in customer service capacity are acceptable.
Experience with first-tier information technology support.
Have excellent interpersonal, communication, organization, and analytic skills.
Ability to work creatively, collaboratively, and effectively, both as a team member and independently.
Skills in the use of library components, technology (computer and personal device troubleshooting) and web applications (standard research tools).
Ability to work Sunday (10:00 am – 6:00 pm) and Monday – Thursday early afternoon/evening shift (1:00 pm – 9:00 pm) hours during the academic semesters. Must be flexible to work during the day (Monday - Friday 8:30 am – 5:00 pm) when the college is not in session.
Preferred Qualifications:
Familiarity with integrating iterative technologies into a user base and providing support for technology and user experience.
Facility with integrated library systems, learning management systems, and/or ticket management systems preferred.
Job Responsibilities:
Oversee the provision of circulation and reserve services using OCLC’s WorldShare Management System (WMS), which includes the receiving, sorting, and check-in of print newspapers, magazines, and journals in WMS.
Oversee the regular maintenance of the book stacks. Revising the shelving of items done by the student employees. Collaborating with the Head of Cataloging/Collection Development, devising plans for shifting to allow for future growth and provide information on materials missing, lost, or damaged.
Demonstrated ability in exercising professional judgment in managing customer relations situations including dealing with problem customers; processing new borrower applications; and handling borrow questions/complaints regarding circulation policies.
Coordinate the borrowing and lending among qualified member institutions of the Memphis Area Library Consortium. Working with the circulation teams at these consortium institutions, handling the fines or fees of lost or late materials.
Compile and maintain circulation statistics for use in library and accreditation reports. Collaborate with the offices of Financial Aid, Bursar, Rhodes Express, Payroll, and Human Resources to facilitate the collection of library charges based on data from these reports.
Supervise the RSAs and student employees which includes hiring, training, scheduling, and conduct annual performance reviews on the RSAs. Verify the accuracy of a student’s time as logged in the Workday system. Train and coordinate with RSAs and student employees to ensure the opening, closing, and securing of the building in accordance with the scheduled hours.
Supervise the use of the Distraction Reduced Testing Room. Monitor incoming and outgoing tests, ensuring that the workflow remains error free. Ensure that student employees and librarians are aware of any workflow changes or updates.
Provide research and first-tier technology support (at least 15 hours per week) to students, faculty, and staff; using the helpdesk ticketing system, create tickets to ensure the situation that the entire IS team is informed. Acts as the escalation point for critical issues and facilitates a final resolution. Handle emergency situations as necessary and revise emergency preparedness plans with teams as required.
Work with the library team and the Assistant Director of User Engagement and Experience to set departmental goals and objectives, establish policies and procedures, design workflows and maintain internal documentation. Collaborate with the other team members to evaluate services, explore opportunities for new models to enhance library services.
Remain current in professional development through workshops, LISTSERVS, webinars and conferences, while also serving on internal project teams and college committees or workgroups.
Regular attendance is an essential function to perform the duties of this position.

Physical Demands:
General office environment that requires sitting on a constant basis. The candidate will perform computer work, keyboard use, and telecommunications on a frequent basis. Manual dexterity will be required to perform keyboard and writing activities on a frequent basis. Visual acuity is required on a frequent basis to read and review print and electronic documents. Reaching and pushing/pulling with a force of up to 10lbs will be performed. The mobility of the candidate will be sufficient to allow moving about the office and to and from the building on an occasional basis. The physical demands must be met to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
