Purpose

Manage the day-to-day operations of the University Writing Center, a unit of the Department of Rhetoric and Writing. Support the mission of the University Writing Center through leadership in training, outreach, supervision, student mentorship, and administrative collaboration.

Responsibilities

  • Consult individually with undergraduate students on their writing.
  • Oversee and actively participate in Writing Center outreach efforts on campus and in the community through writing studios, panels, presentations, and workshops on writing and the writing process. Coordinate, delegate, and conduct Writing Center consultant training throughout the academic year.
  • Collaborate with the Writing Center Faculty Director and Operations Manager on long-term planning and budget management.
  • Guide graduate and undergraduate students in preparing for rhetoric-based writing center work, teaching opportunities, and administrative positions through projects, panels, presentations, and research.
  • Manage the Writing Center internship program and teach students enrolled in RHE 368C, Writing Center Internship.
  • Hire, supervise, and evaluate undergraduate and graduate Writing Center consultants each semester.
  • Write 40–50 letters of recommendation annually. Communicate effectively with faculty, staff, and students at UT and external institutions through email, phone, and formal letters.
  • Other related functions as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of five years of relevant experience in writing center work, teaching, or academic support, with a focus on program administration or coordination.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with various student, staff, and faculty populations.
  • Experience in training, mentoring, or supervising student employees.
  • Extensive experience in conflict management, critical thinking, decision-making, and relationship management.
  • Strong knowledge of organizational operations and strategic planning.
  • Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications

  • PhD in Rhetoric, Composition, English, Education, or a related field.
  • Previous experience working in a university writing center or in a writing-focused academic program.
  • Familiarity with rhetoric-based writing instruction.
  • Experience in program management or curriculum development.
  • Strong writing and editing skills, including experience writing letters of recommendation or other formal communications.

Salary Range

$65,000+  depending on qualifications

Working Conditions

Typical office environment; requires regular use of computer and telephone; occasional evening or weekend work for events, workshops, or outreach.

Employment Eligibility:
