Here at Tin Can, we’re working to give kids the social independence we had growing up —without smartphones. We’ve built a remix of the classic home phone we had when we were young, but on a totally private network and with a bunch of added safety functionality (plus some fun surprise features in the pipeline).
We’re building a bold, authentic, nostalgic, and kinda quirky brand that resonates with folks who want something simpler & better for their kids than the tech-infused lives we’re currently living (and who have a sense of humor about it).
As we scale, we’re ready to bring on our very first data hire — someone who will build the foundation of our data infrastructure and analytics practice.
We’re looking for an Analytics Engineer to build Tin Can’s data systems from the ground up and enable us to scale to hundreds of thousands (or more) of users.
This is a hands-on role where you’ll design and maintain pipelines, create models in our warehouse, and stand up the tooling that makes data reliable and accessible across the company. At the same time, you’ll roll up your sleeves to build dashboards, generate reports, and run analysis that guides product, growth, and strategic decisions.
You’ll be the primary owner of Tin Can’s data environment—everything from ingestion and transformation to reporting and visualization. And because this is Tin Can’s first data role, you’ll get to define the architecture, the processes, and the culture around data as we grow. Speed matters here: you’ll balance building scalable systems with quickly delivering MVPs that move the business forward.
You want to be the “data pioneer.” You get excited by the idea of being Tin Can’s first dedicated data hire, setting up infrastructure that will scale to millions of users.
You like building from scratch. With little in place today, you’ll be the one standing up the warehouse, transformation layer, dashboards, and reporting systems.
You enjoy both engineering and analytics. You’ll spend most of your time building robust pipelines and models, but you’ll also dive into dashboards and analyses that give the team immediate visibility into the business.
You thrive on impact. Your work won’t sit in a silo—you’ll be directly shaping company strategy, new features, and how we serve families.
You value speed over polish (when it counts). You’re comfortable shipping something imperfect but useful, then iterating to make it better. You won’t let perfect be the enemy of good.
You enjoy getting your hands dirty. This is an individual contributor role where you’ll write the code, run the queries, and ship the dashboards yourself.
You believe in our mission. We’re all in love with what we’re working on, and you should be too.
Data Infrastructure – Design and build Tin Can’s first data pipelines, warehouse, and modeling layer (likely with tools like dbt, Airflow/Prefect, and a modern warehouse).
Data Modeling – Define and maintain clean, reliable, scalable data models that power dashboards and analyses.
Business Intelligence – Set up reporting systems and BI tools; build dashboards that give leadership visibility into usage, growth, and key company metrics.
Analytics & Insights – Conduct ad-hoc analyses on product usage and customer behavior; translate findings into actionable recommendations for product and strategy.
Data Quality & Reliability – Implement monitoring, testing, and documentation practices that ensure the team can trust the data—while still moving quickly when speed is the priority.
Future Growth – As Tin Can scales, evolve our data stack to handle increasing complexity and volume, and help us expand into advanced analytics, experimentation, and predictive modeling.
Engineering Chops. You’ve built and maintained data pipelines and modeled data for use across a company. You know SQL inside out, and you’re comfortable with Python or similar languages for ETL. You likely also have worked with dbt or similar tech.
Scrappy & Pragmatic. You know how to balance rigor with speed—you’re not afraid to ship something quickly and iterate later.
Analytics Mindset. You’re not just excited about the infrastructure, but you love working with the data itself too. You can take business questions, dig into the data, and return insights that are clear, actionable, and reliable.
Self-Starter Energy. You’re comfortable being the first data hire, defining priorities, and building systems from scratch.
Startup Adaptability. You thrive in a small team where things move fast and needs shift constantly.
Exposure to product analytics and event-based tracking
Experience scaling data systems in a fast-growing consumer or hardware company
Mission with Impact – Help build a company that’s redefining connection in a healthier, more analog way.
High Autonomy – You’ll be Tin Can’s data foundation, with real ownership and authority.
Small but Mighty Team – Work directly with every part of the business and shape the company’s trajectory from here on out.
Career Growth – As Tin Can scales, you’ll have the chance to grow into leadership or deepen your technical expertise—your role will evolve with the company.
