CORE JOB SUMMARY
The Manager, Research Laboratory oversees the day-to-day operations of the research laboratory, including maintenance and upkeep and ensuring an efficient and effective laboratory working environment.
CORE JOB FUNCTIONS
1. Formulates and implements short and long-range goals for the operation of the laboratories.
2. Implements laboratory policies and procedures and coordinates with research staff on issues which impact laboratory services.
3. Serves as a liaison between investigators, research personnel, and staff to solve specific operating problems and improve technical activities.
4. Advises on technical procedures, techniques and equipment, and maintains conformance with specific operational standards.
5. Maintains quality checks on the safety of laboratories and insures maintenance of the facilities according to good laboratory practices.
6. Installs and maintains laboratory equipment in compliance with federal regulations.
7. Assures that the laboratory technicians are properly trained in standard operating procedures and equipment specific requirements.
8. Assists in the determination of fiscal requirements and in the preparation of budgetary recommendations.
9. Compiles and prepares reports and analyses, setting forth progress, adverse trends, and appropriate recommendations and conclusions.
10. Establishes and continuously assesses the effectiveness of the internal controls within the unit and compliance with University policies and procedures. Ensures employees are trained on controls within the function and on University policy and procedures.

Department Specific Functions
The Research Laboratory Manager will play a central role in overseeing the daily operations of a multidisciplinary neuroscience research laboratory focused on understanding and restoring motor and respiratory function after spinal cord injury and related neurological disorders. The manager will support advanced experimental procedures, including in vivo electrophysiology, optogenetics, calcium imaging, and behavioral testing in rodent models. Responsibilities will include managing animal protocols, coordinate surgical preparation and recovery, and working closely with veterinary and core staff to ensure compliance with institutional animal care standards. The manager will maintain and troubleshoot specialized equipment used for neural recording, stimulation, and imaging, while also supervising and training lab personnel on technical procedures and safety protocols. Additional duties include organizing data and experimental records, managing laboratory inventory, assisting with grant preparation and budget tracking, and supporting administrative needs to enhance research efficiency. The role also involves fostering a collaborative, inclusive, and productive lab environment that encourages mentorship, innovation, and scientific rigor.

Experience:
Experience working in a biomedical research laboratory, with at least 2 years in a supervisory or lab management role. Experience with rodent models, IACUC/IBC protocol compliance, and overseeing daily lab operations (ordering, inventory, equipment maintenance) is strongly preferred. Prior work in neuroscience is highly desirable.
Knowledge, Skills and Attitudes:
The ideal candidate will have a strong background in neuroscience research with hands-on experience in techniques such as in vivo electrophysiology, animal behavioral studies, and histological analysis. They should be familiar with rodent handling in both behavioral and physiological experiments and possess a solid understanding of data analysis and troubleshooting of technical equipment. The role requires someone who can effectively train and support lab members in experimental protocols, data collection, and analysis workflows. Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously are essential. The candidate should demonstrate excellent interpersonal and communication skills and be capable of fostering a positive, productive, and collaborative team environment. Experience working in interdisciplinary settings alongside graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and clinical researchers is important. Finally, the candidate should be highly motivated, proactive, and adaptable, with a commitment to continuous learning and scientific excellence.
