Principal Data Engineer
Skills
- Advanced Python and SQL development for data processing
- Experience with Apache Spark / PySpark for large-scale processing
- Familiarity with streaming technologies (Apache Kafka or equivalent)
- Data modeling and warehousing concepts (OLAP/OLTP, normalized/denormalized schemas)
- Experience with dbt or SQLMesh and at least one major data platform (Databricks or Snowflake)
- Strong understanding of data security, role-based access, encryption, and handling PHI/PII
Responsibilities
- Design, implement, and maintain scalable data models and architectures for healthcare datasets (claims, EHR, BCDA, CCLF).
- Build, optimize, and maintain ETL/ELT pipelines using Spark/PySpark and related tooling.
- Consolidate data from multiple sources into a single source of truth and implement medallion/multi-tenant patterns.
- Collaborate with Data Scientists, Engineers, and stakeholders to translate requirements into technical solutions.
- Contribute to and enforce data governance, security, and compliance practices (HIPAA, SOC2, HITRUST).
- Identify and resolve performance bottlenecks and ensure long-term pipeline scalability.
- Provide technical leadership and mentorship to other data engineering team members.
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Data Science, or related field (or equivalent experience)
- Advanced degree (MS/PhD) in a relevant field is a plus
