Packaging Engineer

Company Description

The Wonderful Company—home to FIJI Water, POM Wonderful, JUSTIN Wine, Teleflora, Wonderful Pistachios, and Halos—is built on a culture of collaboration, innovation, and a commitment to improving the well-being of our employees and the communities we serve. Our centralized Global Sourcing organization plays a critical role in supporting that mission, and we’re looking for a Packaging Engineer to join our Technical Packaging team.

In this role, you’ll support the development, optimization, and commercialization of packaging across several of our iconic brands. You’ll lead projects from concept through launch, working closely with internal teams and external suppliers to bring new products to market, improve quality and performance, qualify new materials, and drive cost-savings and sustainability initiatives. This position reports to the Senior Packaging Manager and offers broad exposure across our diverse business units.

This position will be based at our West Los Angeles, CA office. We work a hybrid schedule with an in-office requirement Monday-Wednesday and the option to work remotely on Thursday and Friday.

Job Description

  • Work closely with Business Units, packaging vendors, and Global Sourcing category managers to deliver packaging initiatives, including cost savings, quality improvements, innovation, and sustainability projects across material categories such as corrugated, paperboard, glass, rigid plastic, and plastic films.
  • Develop strong working relationships throughout the company, both at the corporate office and operations facilities.
  • Provide technical expertise to Business Units, assessing opportunities and risks and supplying information and analysis for costing, feasibility and new development discussions.
  • Manage multiple projects simultaneously and deliver relevant packaging technical information (mockups, dielines, pallet patterns, specs, manufacturing tolerances, etc.).
  • Design, coordinate, execute and report out on packaging tests to ensure packaging meets required performance criteria (line trials, new item start-ups, distribution test, lab tests).
  • Maintain and update packaging specifications within packaging specification database.
  • Provide technical sign-offs on new artwork, ensuring dielines and requirements are accurate.
  • Partner with Sourcing to identify and evaluate new suppliers during bids, providing packaging requirements and supporting new supplier qualifications, testing, and onboarding.

Qualifications

  • 1-3 years of packaging development experience in a CPG environment, ideally within the agriculture or food/beverage industries.
  • BS in Packaging Science/Engineering, Industrial Engineering or a relevant technical field.
  • Subject Matter Expert (SME) in packaging materials with the ability to provide sound technical recommendations, paired with a passion for learning and knowledge-sharing.
  • Experience with line trials, distribution testing (i.e., ISTA) and pallet pattern design (TOPS preferred or CAPE).
  • Working knowledge of packaging and general manufacturing processes.
  • Hands-on experience with lab-scale package testing, including data analysis and interpretation.
  • Strong working knowledge of 2-D and 3-D CAD tools and drawing interpretations (ArtiosCAD and Illustrator preferred).
  • Proven project management skills, successful in leading packaging development projects from start to finish in a cross-functional environment.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, especially Excel.
  • Clear, effective communicator with the ability to present technical information to audiences across all levels of the organization.
  • Analytical and creative problem-solver with a strong ownership, balanced by openness to new ideas, methods, and collaborative solutions.
  • Ability to travel multiple times per month, primarily to California’s Central Valley.
  • Bilingual in Spanish and English preferred.

Pay Range: $85,000-$110,000 and may include a discretionary bonus. Final compensation will be dependent upon skills & experience.
