Job Description

Be a part of a world-class academic healthcare system, UChicago Medicine, as a Nurse Associate at our DCAM clinic. Here, you will work alongside our Urology clinic team. This position is a 100% onsite opportunity. You will need to be based in the greater Chicagoland area.

Urologists at the University of Chicago Medicine provide treatment for a wide variety of urologic conditions in men and women. We believe in developing and using innovative and comprehensive treatments that safeguard your quality of life by preserving normal urinary and sexual function. 

 

The Nurse Associate is responsible for coordinating diagnostic and therapeutic regimens for a specified group of patients, and maintains cohesiveness between clinical research, physicians, and patients.    The Nurse Associate coordinates physician activities with referring physicians, nursing staff, hospital administration, ancillary services, support services, insurance companies and other departments/sections and agencies as needed and assists the physician with a wide range of activities necessary to manage clinical research programs.    In addition, the Nurse Associate functions as a liaison between physicians, patients, and families, assists physicians with bedside procedures, and provides patient care the clinic with the physician as necessary. 

 

Essential Job Functions

  • Conducts, responds to, follow up on, and triages patient phone calls to the physician as appropriate
  • Assists physician in clinic or procedure area with patient examinations, diagnostic tests and/or therapeutic procedures. Continuously monitors vital signs of patients under conscious sedation throughout procedure
  • Counsels’ patients concerning lifestyle modifications, medication regimens, side effects, and interactions using an appropriate psychosocial communication level
  • Communicates to clinics coordinators follow-up appointments, ancillary and/or pre-operative testing and scheduling needed for patient
  • Arranges patient admissions; coordinates ordering of tests/procedures with fellows, attendings, and other nursing staff
  • Functions as patient resource for education; assists physicians and prepares patients and family members by explaining the protocol, examination, procedure, diagnostic test and/or treatment. Also discusses the range of services covered by various study protocols and identifies services for which the patient or the patient's insurance carrier may be responsible.   Feels confident discussing financial information
  • Assesses patients' and families' physical and psychological resources; collaborates with other healthcare team members to help patients adapt to the disease and therapy involved
  • Works with case managers to coordinate patient discharge planning and teaching, instructs patients on post-procedure care as necessary and maintains regular patient telephone contact throughout the treatment period
  • Enhances protocols for patient test and triage procedures
  • Develops and administers policies and procedures for all patient contacts. Revises and enforces current policies and procedures as needed
  • Communicates with referring physicians and insurance companies
  • Completes all consuls, insurance, visiting nurse and disability letters
  • Develops critical pathways for patient population served by supervising physician(s)
  • Assists physicians in coordination of research programs by screening patients for acceptance into clinical research and outcome programs. Maintains office file notes, reviews charts, enters data for sectional demographic database, assists in summarization and analysis of data
  • Has knowledge of, promotes, and utilizes appropriate patient care protocol(s) relating to the physical, psychosocial, and developmental needs of patients
  • Recognizes an emergency situation and initiates appropriate care
  • Performs other duties assigned

Qualifications

  • Associate Degree in Nursing
    • Associate Degree Nurses are required to enroll in a BSN program within six (6) to nine (9) months of hire, and make progress toward and complete their BSN degree within 30 months. ADN nurses receive 100% tuition reimbursement towards a BSN degree from an accredited program.
  • Minimum of two years' experience as a registered nurse in a clinical setting
  • Strong verbal and writing skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills; ability to handle a wide variety of public contacts, including conflicts, with patience, tact, courtesy, and discretion
  • Demonstrated ability to organize a demanding workload
  • Ability to function both autonomously and as part of a team
  • Considerable skill in determining priorities, working independently, and making decisions.
  • High degree of initiative and problem-solving ability
  • Demonstrated ability to exercise judgment, make independent decisions, and assume responsibility
  • Ability and willingness to cooperate with co-workers, supervisors, and physicians to do whatever needs to be done in order to serve the patient
  • Flexibility to learn and incorporate new systems and processes
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a fast-paced environment with composure and poise.
  • Capable of handling responsibilities that are broad in scope, of substantial intricacy, and involve dealing with complex interrelationships
  • May be required to exercise judgment in selecting the most pertinent guideline, to interpret precedents, to adapt standard practices in differing situations, and to recommend alternative actions in unprecedented situations
  • Licensed Registered Nurse in Illinois

Compensation & Benefits Overview

 

UChicago Medicine is committed to transparency in compensation and benefits.  The pay range provided reflects the anticipated wage or salary reasonably expected to be offered for the position.

 

The pay range is based on a full-time equivalent (1.0 FTE) and is reflective of current market data, reviewed on an annual basis. Compensation offered at the time of hire will vary based on candidate qualifications and experience and organizational considerations, such as internal equity. Pay ranges for employees subject to Collective Bargaining Agreements are negotiated by the medical center and their respective union.
