Senior Officer, Science, Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals

Application Deadline: Friday, September 5, 2025.

Please include both a resume and a cover letter with your application.

Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals

This new project aims to measurably reduce Americans’ exposure to harmful endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs). The project will focus on reducing exposure to the most harmful EDCs in use in the near-term, while laying the foundation for longer-term policy reform to prevent additional harmful EDCs from being introduced. The Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals project is a collaboration between Pew’s Environment and Government Performance portfolios.

The Environment Portfolio focuses on science-based, nonpartisan, and sustainable solutions to help protect the planet and people. We work in partnership with governments, Indigenous rights holders, intergovernmental organizations, non-governmental organizations, local stakeholders, scientists, and other researchers to advance public policy so that nature and communities can thrive.

The Government Performance portfolio provides the nonpartisan research, solutions, and momentum decisionmakers need to ensure our institutions improve the health of people in the United States and enable them to successfully climb the economic ladder. Those goals are pursued through a wide range of the portfolio’s policy-focused projects (with explorations into new areas underway)—from ensuring states’ finances are prepared for future volatility, to unlocking gateways to mental health care, to addressing the nation’s lack of attainable housing.

Position Overview

The senior officer will oversee the technical and scientific accuracy of research related to endocrine disrupting chemicals, and related issues as part of a broader effort to reduce exposure to the most harmful EDCs in the near term while laying the foundation for longer term reform to prevent additional harmful EDCs from being introduced to the economy and environment.

This role requires a deep understanding of applied research in human health, epidemiology, endocrinology, toxicology, health care economics or related fields, and familiarity with health policy or the oversight of chemicals. Reporting to the project director, the senior officer will serve as a lead subject matter expert, oversee the technical and scientific accuracy of research deliverables, and develop relationships with relevant stakeholders to advance research impact.

This position is based in Pew’s Washington, D.C., office and will participate in Pew’s hybrid work program with core days in the office and the flexibility to telework the remaining days. Staff also enjoy four telework “flex weeks” per year.

Responsibilities

  • Foster a work environment that inspires excellence, values impact, encourages transparency, builds mutual trust and respect, embraces and values diversity, and is collaborative, caring and compassionate.
  • Provide recommendations to guide the development of Pew strategies and activities around endocrine disrupting chemicals, toxics, and other key scientific issues.
  • Collaborate with adjacent workstreams (Policy, Cross-cutting, Private Sector) to develop a learning agenda that prioritizes information gaps relevant to the project’s diverse lines of work. As budgets allow, lead the development of effective research proposals and work plans in coordination with external scientists that address these gaps.
  • Lead the development of, and ensure the scientific accuracy of, Pew-led research products such as literature reviews, case studies, policy briefs, and infographics. Supervise the contributions of other Pew staff in these efforts. Present findings internally and externally with policymakers, media, and other stakeholders.
  • Represent Pew as a lead subject matter expert at conferences, seminars, and official forums.
  • Ensure all staff supporting the project’s work in policy and private sector workstreams have a solid understanding of EDCs, including modes of action and evidence of harm.
  • Work with the project director to identify a credible party to produce a synthesis of existing science around one or more families of endocrine disrupting chemicals.
  • Support the establishment of, and provide ongoing support for, a scientific advisory board for the project.
  • Maintain extensive and wide-ranging knowledge of pertinent research in fields relevant to EDCs, including toxicology, epidemiology, health care economics, and related fields. Develop a plan to regularly update and communicate research findings to relevant decision makers.
  • Develop, build, and maintain collaborative relationships with relevant officials, experts, institutions, government departments, and nongovernmental organizations.
  • Collaborate with adjacent workstreams (Policy, Cross-cutting, Private Sector workstreams) to ensure that project goals are aligned and met.
  • Participate in activities that support program and Pew-wide objectives.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience is required; advanced degree is strongly preferred.
  • Generally, ten years of applicable experience.
  • Expertise in a scientific field is required. Specific knowledge of human health, endocrinology, or toxicology is preferred.
  • Knowledge of research methodologies and experimental designs is essential. Proven research and analytical skills. Deft at translating scientific components and language into accessible and impactful research, whether that be through written or oral communication.
  • Experience working in a technical role within a research or policy institution is highly desirable, as is experiencing developing, managing, and contributing to a portfolio of research projects.
  • Effectively synthesizes large amounts of information, quickly and accurately identifies gaps in research and policy analysis, develops ideas for research products that generate broad interest.
  • Experience working productively with a wide array of stakeholders, both internal and external, and approaching issues with a nonpartisan and objective mindset in a rapidly changing environment.
  • Excellent oral, writing, and editing skills. Skilled at informing and influencing internal and external audiences through written and oral communications.
  • Familiarity with policy systems on state and federal levels.
  • Seasoned judgement and comfort in making decisions, justifying recommendations, and being responsive, clear, and firm with colleagues and partners.
  • Effective and results-oriented planner for both short- and long-term programmatic goals and orienting these goals to align with the project team and institution’s procedures.
