Senior Director, Program for a 125+ employee (and growing) remote education non-profit providing professional learning to K-12 educators nationally

Type of Vacancy: Salaried, full-time

Start date: August-September 2025

Location Preference: While this is a remote position, we strongly prefer candidates who reside in the Northeastern United States (NY, NJ, PA, MA, VT, NH, ME, CT, RI, MD, DE, DC) due to the regional focus of this role. Applicants from other locations are still encouraged to apply.

Report to: Chief Program Officer (CPO) or Senior Director, Program

Supervises: Often supervises Director(s), Program, Senior Manager(s), Program, and/or other Senior Director(s), Program. Dependent on the project, the Senior Director, Program is often a Project Leader with project team supervision responsibilities.

Compensation: The full salary range for this position is $125,000 - $189,074 annually. This range represents the full earning potential for the role, including opportunities for salary growth over time based on performance, tenure, and organizational budget. The anticipated hiring range for this position is $125,000 - $164,889. Teaching Lab will generally cap salaries for new employees at 105% of the midpoint of the full salary range ($164,889) to allow for continued growth in the role over time. There are two types of experience being considered for this role: Experience that is directly relevant to the role and Total Working Experience, in all fields. This includes: internships, part-time work, and consulting work. In collaboration with the hiring manager, the People and Culture team calculates experience based on the candidate’s most current resume. When calculating the offer, consideration is given to candidates who possess additional qualifications (i.e., desired qualifications). 

Areas of Expertise: Programmatic Leadership: Setting the vision for instructional management at the system level and implementing a strategy to coach district and state educational leaders (e.g., Superintendents, Chiefs) in alignment with that vision; leading teams to achieve excellent outcomes for students. People Leadership: Effective management and coaching of direct reports and project team members across lines of difference. Leader Coaching: Coaching school or district leaders to maximize time, talent, and curricular resources that support the delivery of high-quality STEM instruction. Instructional Expertise:Deep knowledge of high-quality STEM instructional materials (HQIM) and research-based practices in math and science education, with a focus on fostering conceptual understanding and equitable access for all learners.

SUMMARY OF POSITION

The Senior Director, Program helps set Teaching Lab’s programmatic goals, creates the systems, strategies, and processes for meeting goals, delegates work to team members, and leads the implementation of these systems and processes to meet the programmatic goals. The Senior Director, Program’s work stream is either more complex than that of a Director, or they have more experience in the role compared to a Director, or they may manage a larger group of people in the organization. The Senior Director, Program will often lead projects that require greater complexity, cross-project, and cross-departmental collaboration. This role is critical in Teaching Lab’s mission to positively impact educator practice in service of increased student learning. 

Frequent travel is required for this role.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Primary responsibilities for the Senior Director, Program include:
  • Support the development of Teaching Lab’s programmatic strategy and leadership of the programmatic division
  • Help set and review programmatic goals and develop programmatic strategy with the CPO and other Senior Directors, Program
  • Identify programmatic and partnership challenges and innovates solutions and new programming to improve teaching and learning and advance educational outcomes, in partnership with the CPO
  • Implement excellent programmatic services 
  • Manage programmatic projects and team members to successfully meet meet the goals of the projects; projects include but are not limited to: professional learning content development projects, professional learning implementation with state and district systems, direct-to-teacher or direct-to-leader coaching, etc.
  • Act as a content area expert aligned with organizational needs, i.e., has some area of content expertise (like subject-area expertise in ELA, math, science, or social studies curriculum and/or instructional expertise, or general expertise in coaching for continuous improvement or state/system level leadership development, etc.) that they bring to bear on aligned projects as well as support team members to build their content expertise
  • Often hold the role of a Project Lead or Project Sponsor on project teams, responsible for ensuring project success and sustainability. However, given time, capacity, competencies, skills, and interests, the Senior Director, Program could hold multiple other roles on project teams (e.g., Coach Developer, Client Partnership Manager, Instructional Designer, Subject Matter Expert, Coach/Facilitator, etc.)
  • Help shape the program for each partner aligned with the partner’s goals 
  • Build, and continuously update knowledge of Teaching Lab’s programming and services, in order to knowledgeably suggest adaptations and customizations 
  • Develop a deep understanding of partner enabling conditions and needs to inform programmatic implementation plans
  • Act as an external champion of Teaching Lab with key stakeholders
  • Support team members to and/or directly maintain and renew contracts with clients, especially large and complex projects, to sustain impact on teacher and student learning; support business development as needed 
  • Design high-quality, research-based, user-centered professional learning content, services, and tools/resources 
  • Identify key areas where Teaching Lab should create materials and content for programmatic partnerships and courses
  • Engage in or manage Teaching Lab’s user-centered design processes (engaging with Teacher Advisory Board, supporting pilot partnerships, developing rapid prototypes) and use learning and insights to inform design
  • Engage in or manage Teaching Lab’s design process to develop content, including drafting, feedback cycles, pilot partnerships (as applicable), and finalization steps (e.g., adhere to Teaching Lab’s style and branding guidelines when developing new content)
  • Support team members or directly apply best practices for virtual and in-person adult learning in the design of professional learning content
  • Engage in efficient and effective project management as a Project Lead or Project Sponsor
  • Lead team members to implement the project plans for assigned projects; if needed, identify needs for consultant support to complete projects on time and with high quality; supervise consultants 
  • Manage partner project plans that track the execution of services related to scopes of work, and support other team members to maintain individual partner project plans for each project
  • Model strong organizational skills, time management, and workflow management while attending to the diverse needs of partners and keeping a radically responsive orientation
  • Develop and innovate systems, tools, and processes to support effective and efficient implementation of services to scale Teaching Lab’s partnerships and impact over time
  • Support team members to and/or directly maintain contracts and invoices for each partner; collaborate with other team members and the Finance department to ensure accurate invoices are billed and collected
  • If applicable, provide vision, direction, and oversight of direct reports as a Home Manager
  • Model the people manager-specific competency and implement actions that support a positive work culture and increase productivity (e.g., providing feedback, coaching, counseling, training, development, etc.)
  • Provide coaching and support to direct reports on their projects and/or assignments, including identifying and addressing development needs and supports
  • Monitor workloads and capacity to ensure effectiveness and productivity while promoting time management and prioritization of assignments
  • Provide frequent values-based feedback and recognition to direct reports
  • Ensure the successful completion of direct reports’ annual goals as well as those of their direct reports
  • Conduct annual evaluations for direct reports
  • Complete internal tasks related to people management in a timely manner
  • Hire for open Program department roles
  • Engage in cross-functional collaboration
  • Collaborate with other functions to create and innovate on systems, strategies, tools, and processes to increase the effectiveness of the project-based work team structure and overall programmatic success
  • Manage and collaborate with other Program Team members to continuously refine and develop high-quality professional learning content and implement professional learning
  • Manage and develop Teaching Lab team members to identify and engage new and existing school system partners on scopes of work that improve outcomes for teachers and students
  • Support team members to collaborate with and directly collaborate with the Learning & Research department to adapt and improve Teaching Lab’s high-quality data collection and impact evaluation processes
  • Engage in continuous learning
  • Stay abreast and lead others in learning key research and guidance in the field, attend learning experiences to build skills and competencies in project management, client management, coaching, and adult facilitation
  • Engage in personal and organized learning opportunities as a team member at a values-based and mission-focused organization.
  • Create and deliver training to other team members on core skills or competencies within the Senior Director, Program role which is also transferable and critical for other roles
  • Perform other duties as assigned by Program department leadership and/or Executive Team.

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS

  • Education, Work Experience, and Knowledge
  • Bachelor's degree
  • Experience setting goals, creating the systems and processes for meeting the goals for educational programming
  • Experience creating the strategy for a team or business function
  • Track record of effective people management 
  • Ten (10) or more years of combined experience directing projects and leading teams
  • Ten (10) or more years of combined experience planning and implementing projects
  • Ten (10) or more years combined experience working with partners outside of their organization to manage workflow or deliver services
  • Ten (10) or more years combined experience working in PK-12 education, with a minimum of two years experience teaching PK-12 students from traditionally underserved backgrounds with demonstrated evidence of impact
  • Ten (10) or more years combined experience leading or coaching the implementation of HQIM (in any subject area)
  • Deep knowledge and experience with College- and Career-Ready math or ELA content and practice standards
  • Experience designing impactful professional learning for educators
  • Experience facilitating impactful professional learning or coaching for educators
  • Experience leading relationships with clients and stakeholders in an education context
  • Experience teaching or coaching at least one of the following curricula: Math (Amplify Desmos, Carnegie Learning, Envision Mathematics, EngageNY/EurekaMath, Illustrative Math, Into Math, iReady, Savvas, Skyline, Zearn Math); Science (Amplify, OpenSciEd)
