Thermal Hardware Engineer (Starship)
Skills
- Experience with thermal protection systems and heatshield materials
- Fundamentals of aerothermal heating and reentry environments
- Hands-on hardware experience in extreme thermal applications (rockets, reentry vehicles, etc.)
- Familiarity with production, installation, qualification, and use of TPS materials
- CAD experience (Siemens NX or similar) and ability to perform basic thermal/mechanical analysis
- Ability to drive open-ended design and development challenges and resolve on-floor issues
Responsibilities
- Develop, test, and qualify new or improved thermal protection system solutions for Starship architecture
- Own end-to-end thermal hardware solutions from concept through flight hardware and qualification
- Support production floor and vehicle-level issue resolution for flight hardware
- Analyze and troubleshoot post-flight heatshield conditions to drive design and process improvements
- Coordinate multidisciplinary projects with analysis, avionics, structures, supply chain, and reliability teams
- Work with external vendors, suppliers, and test facilities to source materials, capabilities, and processes
Education
- Bachelor's degree in engineering, materials science, mechanical engineering, materials engineering, or chemical engineering
- Relevant coursework or experience in thermodynamics, heat transfer, and material behavior at temperature extremes
