Job Description

The Test Engineer is a critical technical contributor to the planning, execution, and continuous improvement of high-speed turbomachinery research at the Notre Dame Power & Propulsion (ND P&P) facility. This role drives test campaigns, supports the development of advanced test systems, and ensures delivery of high-quality data in a fast-paced research environment.

The Test Engineer will prepare, integrate, and operate high-speed turbomachinery test articles, facilities, and associated instrumentation. Responsibilities include building, calibrating, troubleshooting, and operating a wide range of instrumentation, software, and mechanical systems to safely acquire accurate test data. The role requires frequent collaboration with sponsors, vendors, engineers, program managers, and scientists. Drawing on expertise in instrumentation, data systems, and facility operations, the Test Engineer will independently manage complex testing efforts and provide mentorship to junior staff.

This position requires strong problem-solving skills, systems-level thinking, and effective communication across multidisciplinary teams.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the full lifecycle of high-speed turbomachinery test campaigns, from planning to execution.
  • Define objectives, develop procedures, and ensure safe, repeatable test operations.
  • Operate facilities, oversee startup/shutdown, and manage test article integration.
  • Monitor and validate real-time data quality; troubleshoot hardware and software issues.
  • Document test processes, results, and findings.
  • Design and implement advanced measurement systems, including sensor calibration and validation.
  • Develop test automation and data visualization tools (LabVIEW, MATLAB, Python, etc.).
  • Maintain and improve DAQ systems and control infrastructure for reliability and efficiency.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve issues with sensors, wiring, signal paths, and control loops.
  • Collaborate on facility upgrades, new test system development, and integration of novel hardware.
  • Manage vendor relationships for instrumentation, fabrication, and specialized equipment.
  • Ensure test configurations meet safety standards and technical requirements.
  • Mentor Associate Test Engineers, students, and interns; promote a culture of safety, learning, and technical excellence.
  • Contribute to documentation, reporting, and cost estimation tools.
  • Identify opportunities for process improvements and lead implementation.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering or related field.
  • 3+ years of relevant experience.
  • Familiarity with testing and research environments.
  • Electrical skills for both power and instrumentation applications.
  • Proficiency in data analysis and processing using MATLAB, LabVIEW, Python, or similar tools.
  • Strong computer literacy.
  • Knowledge of mechanical design, materials, and manufacturing processes relevant to turbomachinery hardware.
  • U.S. Citizen

Preferred Qualifications

  • Proficiency with MATLAB and LabVIEW.
  • Experience in advanced data collection, analysis, and interpretation to identify performance issues and optimize designs.
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving abilities.
  • Analytical mindset with the ability to identify patterns and draw data-driven conclusions.
  • Effective communication and collaboration skills across multidisciplinary teams.
