Senior Software Engineer (Fullstack - Slideshare)

About The Company:

At Scribd Inc. (pronounced “scribbed”), our mission is to spark human curiosity. Join our team as we create a world of stories and knowledge, democratize the exchange of ideas and information, and empower collective expertise through our four products: Everand, Scribd, Slideshare, and Fable.

This posting reflects an approved, open position within the organization.

We support a culture where our employees can be real and be bold; where we debate and commit as we embrace plot twists; and where every employee is empowered to take action as we prioritize the customer.

When it comes to workplace structure, we believe in balancing individual flexibility and community connections.  It’s through our flexible work benefit, Scribd Flex, that employees – in partnership with their manager – can choose the daily work-style that best suits their individual needs. A key tenet of Scribd Flex is our prioritization of intentional in-person moments to build collaboration, culture, and connection. For this reason, occasional in-person attendance is required for all Scribd Inc. employees, regardless of their location.

So what are we looking for in new team members? Well, we hire for “GRIT”. The textbook definition of GRIT is demonstrating the intersection of passion and perseverance towards long term goals. At Scribd Inc., we are inspired by the potential that this can unlock, and ask each of our employees to pursue a GRIT-ty approach to their work. In a tactical sense, GRIT is also a handy acronym that outlines the standards we hold ourselves and each other to.  Here’s what that means for you: we’re looking for someone who showcases the ability to set and achieve Goals, achieve Results within their job responsibilities, contribute Innovative ideas and solutions, and positively influence the broader Team through collaboration and attitude.

About the Role

As a Senior Full-Stack Engineer on the Slideshare Team, you will design, build, and improve the features and systems that power Slideshare’s user experiences. On the backend, you’ll primarily work with Ruby on Rails, and on the frontend you’ll use modern web technologies such as Next.js, React.js, JavaScript, CSS, and GraphQL, while also collaborating on innovative projects that involve Machine Learning (ML) and Large Language Models (LLMs)

What You’ll Do:

  • Contribute to technical decisions across the full stack, with a focus on frontend architecture and a strong understanding of backend systems built in Ruby on Rails.

  • Design, build, and ship new user-facing features using Next.js, React.js, TypeScript/JavaScript, CSS, and GraphQL, ensuring performance, accessibility, and maintainability.

  • Integrate backend Rails services with modern frontend frameworks to deliver cohesive, high-quality experiences across Slideshare.

  • Collaborate with machine learning teams to incorporate ML models and LLM-driven features into the product, contributing to enhanced content understanding and AI-powered user workflows.

  • Work closely with product managers, designers, and fellow engineers to deliver features that meet user and business needs.

  • Provide guidance to other engineers through code reviews, architectural discussions, and knowledge sharing, helping reinforce best practices and engineering excellence.

  • Improve the reliability, performance, and observability of Slideshare’s applications through thoughtful use of logging, metrics, and monitoring tools.

  • Contribute to CI/CD pipelines, deployment workflows, and automation to reduce friction and improve developer productivity.

  • Implement performance optimizations across both frontend (Next.js/React) and backend (Rails), addressing scaling challenges for high-traffic, globally distributed users.

We’re Looking for Someone With:

  • 8+ years of professional software development experience, with strong full-stack capabilities and deep experience in modern web technologies.

  • Expertise in frontend engineering JavaScript, React.js, Next.js, ES6+, CSS, and building performant, user-focused interfaces.

  • Solid backend engineering skills, with strong working knowledge of Ruby on Rails including building REST/GraphQL APIs, data models, and server-side business logic.

  • Hands-on experience with AWS, including deploying and operating applications using services such as EC2, ECS/EKS, Lambda, S3, ElastiCache, or CloudWatch.

  • Strong understanding of observability practices including logging, metrics, dashboards, and alerting with hands-on experience using tools such as Datadog and Sentry to diagnose and improve production issues.

  • Experience optimizing performance end-to-end, including frontend rendering performance, caching strategies, asset delivery, and backend query/response efficiency.

  • Ability to contribute to architectural discussions and make informed technical decisions while collaborating closely with staff engineers and cross-functional partners.

  • Strong sense of ownership, prioritization, and attention to detail, with a track record of shipping high-quality work in a fast-moving environment.

  • Excellent communication skills, comfortable collaborating in a remote-first team and explaining technical ideas to both technical and non-technical audiences.
