Do you have a passion for making a tangible community impact through recycling and other solid waste management initiatives and public education? The Solid Waste Outreach Coordinator leads education and outreach efforts for the Solid Waste Department, engaging with residents, businesses, and volunteers to promote recycling, litter prevention, and other waste reduction initiatives.

You will coordinate education events and the Keep Sarasota County Beautiful (KSCB) program, collaborating with partners such as UF/IFAS Extension and Sustainability to drive meaningful change in Sarasota County. This position offers a dynamic and rewarding opportunity for those that enjoy community engagement and stewardship.
  • Public Education and Outreach: Coordinates and presents solid waste information at public education events, supports digital and print content development, and maintains ongoing education through training and collaboration.
  • Business Outreach and Engagement: Facilitates waste audits, makes recommendations, and increases knowledge of waste reduction/recycling programs and resources available with local businesses in coordination with other Solid Waste teams and UF/IFAS Extension and Sustainability as applicable.
  • Keep Sarasota County Beautiful (KSCB) Program: Manages the KSCB program, including budgeting, grant oversight, procurement, major cleanup events, volunteer coordination, and KSCB Advisory Board (scheduling, agenda development, meeting documentation, communications, etc.).
  • Adopt-a-Road Program: Oversees application processing, safety training, supply distribution, and data tracking for the program.
  • Reporting and Compliance: Prepares reports for Keep America Beautiful (KAB), National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES), and internal dashboards; ensures compliance with Sarasota County’s mandatory recycling program and supports facilitation of the County Facilities Recycle contract.

Work Hours:  Monday – Friday, 7:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.

About You

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Associate's degree from an accredited college or university AND three (3) years of job-related experience.

  • -OR- Bachelor's degree in an accredited college or university in related field AND one (1) year of job-related experience.

  • -OR- Five (5) years of professional-related experience can be substituted for the degree at management's discretion.

  • A valid Florida Driver's License at the time of hire.

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Expereince working with; Microsoft Office, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook. 

Physical Demands:

  • Must occasionally lift and/or move more than 50 pounds.

Subject to Passing Substance Screening:  This position is subject to passing a pre-employment substance screening.  An applicant who fails to pass a required drug screening test shall be disqualified from employment for a period of five (5) years.

About Everything Else

Starting Pay Range: $25.70 - $26.00/hour, based on your experience.
