Principal Turbomachinery Engineer, Turbine Development

Relativity Space is building the Terran R rocket and related propulsion systems to scale launch capacity. The Propulsion team seeks a Principal Turbomachinery Engineer to advance turbine and turbopump technology for space applications, driving design, analysis, and integration from concept through test and launch while collaborating across manufacturing, test, and systems teams.

Skills

  • Deep experience in turbine and turbopump design for aerospace applications
  • Proven ability performing LCF and HCF analyses and transient aero-thermal simulations
  • Experience with forced-response and rotor-dynamics analyses
  • Strong familiarity with turbopump assembly practices (balancing, fits, clearance checks)
  • Clear technical communication and cross-functional collaboration skills

Responsibilities

  • Lead aerodynamic and structural design of turbine stages and turbopump components for rocket engines.
  • Perform and oversee LCF/HCF, transient thermal/aerodynamic, and forced-response analyses for rotating machinery.
  • Define and validate rotor dynamics, balancing, interference fits, clearances, and structural proofing requirements.
  • Integrate turbomachinery designs with manufacturing and test teams and support build, assembly, and test campaigns.
  • Drive design reviews, set engineering standards, and mentor junior engineers on turbomachinery topics.
  • Collaborate with systems, integration, and test to resolve issues discovered during test and flight development.
  • Develop test plans, analyze test data, and iterate designs based on test outcomes.
  • Document design rationale, analysis results, and verification evidence for program milestones.

Education

  • Degree in engineering or related technical field (required)
