Regional MDS Specialist

Otterbein SeniorLife is a nonprofit senior living organization with over 100 years of service, offering a range of senior care options across Ohio and Indiana. The Northern Regional MDS Specialist will drive MDS accuracy, reimbursement integrity, and quality measure performance by providing education, audits, and consultative support to MDS nurses and interdisciplinary teams across multiple locations.

Skills

  • Proven excellence in MDS completion, coordination, ADR completion and documentation
  • Strong teaching and presentation skills for individual and group education
  • In-depth knowledge of CMS regulations, PDPM, Medicare, Medicaid and managed care
  • Experience conducting audits and analyzing reimbursement/quality data
  • Excellent written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills
  • Proficiency with EMR systems (experience with PointClickCare/Optimus preferred)
  • Detail-oriented with strong time management and prioritization
  • Customer service mindset and good judgment when interacting with residents and families

Responsibilities

  • Partner with location leadership and MDS nurses to meet/exceed MDS goals and critical success factors (reimbursement accuracy, clinical coding, public quality measures).
  • Provide one-on-one and group education on MDS coding, documentation, Medicare/Medicaid, managed care, Quality Measures, and PDPM.
  • Perform routine audits of MDS coding, documentation, and care plans; identify and correct opportunities.
  • Analyze reimbursement and quality results and provide targeted education to improve outcomes.
  • Oversee MDS accuracy, QM/QIP results, and EMR documentation (e.g., PointClickCare), including care plan and risk assessment libraries.
  • Coordinate transitions during MDS staff changes and support onboarding of new MDS nurses.
  • Participate in mock surveys focused on MDS and care plan accuracy.
  • Collaborate with Corporate Clinical Quality Department and internal/external partners to promote best practices.
  • Identify monthly Medicaid case-mix opportunities and coach teams to capture accurate results.
  • Represent Otterbein in provider organizations and build professional networks to stay current on MDS updates.

Education

  • Active RN license required
  • BSN preferred
  • MDS certification is a significant plus
