About the Job – Your Role

The purpose of this position is to provide care and custody of adults in custody (AIC)s, while providing central office oversight and management of a robust program dedicated to assessing, managing, and monitoring the needs, safety risks and concerns of transgender, intersex and non-binary AIC. Position chairs a multi-disciplinary team to address individualized needs of the transgender, intersex, and non-binary AICs. Position works closely with Department of Justice and represents ODOC in legal actions.

This position is management services and may be eligible for Police & Fire (P&F) benefits through Public Employees Retirement System (PERS), as defined by statute.

Minimum Qualifications

A Bachelor's Degree in Business or Public Administration, Behavioral or Social Sciences, or a degree related to the agency program that demonstrates the capacity for the knowledge and skills; and four years of experience coordinating or administering a program
OR;
Any combination of experience or education equivalent to seven years of experience that typically supports the knowledge and skill requirements listed for the classification.

  • This position has a demanding workload with a high level of responsibility, as such, it requires strong ethical leadership, critical thinking skills, resiliency, and the ability to work independently and with a multiple, multidisciplinary teams. Along with this, the employee must possess strong verbal and writing skills and can effectively communicate with a wide variety of people. The position requires the ability to establish and maintain harmonious working relationships with staff at all levels in ODOC and stakeholders outside of the agency.
  • Experience with managing a workload in a constantly changing work situation, as well as plan for and resolve complex problems.
  • Experience understanding and implementing policies and procedures.
  • Experience working with gender-diverse individuals and utilizing trauma-informed care.

Working Conditions

This position is designated as a hybrid working position with a need to report to central administration offices, institutions, or institution visits as needed.

Work is generally performed with the likelihood of prolonged sitting and repeated, extensive use of the computer for e-mail, word processing, and data entry, involvement in telephone conversations and conferences, and the use of research manuals. You will work under pressure of deadlines with frequent interruptions and distractions, balance conflicting workload demands and multiple competing priorities; must be conscious of and maintain a safe and sanitary work environment; and requires lifting to 25 pounds.

You will be responsible for assuring the proper operation of security alarms, tools and key control when located at a department office/institution worksite. The incumbent must be able and willing to make positive contributions to a cooperative team environment. You must be willing and able to work efficiently in a remote work environment. You should adapt to a constantly evolving work environment, often completing special assignments and regular duties under the pressure of shortened deadlines. This position may require work after hours or on weekends and overnight, in-state travel. This position may require the operation of a motor vehicle, requiring a regular driver’s license with a clean driving record.

This position will be required to work inside a Department of Corrections correctional facility during working and, in the case of an emergency, nonworking hours and is subject to assignment in other areas of the Department. This position will have contact with AIC and will be exposed daily to material of a graphic nature (including details/photos of AIC assaults and police reports outlining violent offenses) and to dangerous situations (e.g., verbal or physical assault) does exist when entering a correctional facility. The AICs have the potential for becoming angry, hostile, abusive, and aggressive, increasing the risk for employees of physical injury, death, and/or being taken hostage.

You would be responsible for answering phone calls from callers who are often hostile, frustrated and lash out; must be able to answer their questions calmly and diffuse the situation. Will be required to participate in in-person meetings with maximum custody AICs who have violent history towards staff, other AICs and community members. Has regular telephone, e-mail and in-person contact daily with staff throughout the agency, staff from other departments and agencies, defense attorneys, District Attorney’s and the public. Often deals with sensitive issues that require confidentiality, tact, and diplomacy.

Requirements for Employment

The successful candidate for this position must pass a Criminal Justice Information Systems (CJIS) fingerprint-based background check and maintain CJIS eligibility.
