Lead Optical Test Engineer

Our team is seeking a highly skilled and analytical Lead Optical Test Engineer to guide our optical testing and characterization efforts for passive components. In this critical role, you will be the technical authority for all optical measurements related to our OCS. Your expertise will be essential in ensuring the highest levels of quality and performance from design verification through to production.

This position requires a deep, hands-on understanding of a wide variety of optical measurement techniques and the corresponding equipment. You will not only execute complex tests yourself, but also design the test methodologies, evaluate equipment, and lead a small team of engineers and technicians to implement your strategies. The ideal candidate has an intimate understanding of optical metrics, a meticulous approach to calibration, and the ability to quickly translate complex data into actionable insights and comprehensive reports.

Key Responsibilities
  • Test Strategy & Leadership: (1) Design and define comprehensive optical test plans and methodologies for passive components, ensuring coverage for all critical performance metrics and reliability standards. (2) Evaluate and select optical test equipment, assessing its capabilities to perform the desired measurements with the required precision and accuracy. (3) Manage and mentor a small team to execute test plans efficiently and with the highest level of technical rigor.

  • Optical Measurement & Analysis: (1) Rapidly analyze and interpret large datasets to distinguish between "good" and "bad" data, identifying anomalies and potential measurement or device issues. (2) Create and maintain structured data, including defining detailed datasheets that accurately and completely represent component performance. (3) Develop efficient and clear data reports for internal engineering teams, management, and external customer stakeholders.
  • Failure Analysis: Support the failure analysis process by providing expert-level optical test data and insights, helping to identify root causes of performance degradation or component failures.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Optical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Physics, or a related field.5+ years of hands-on experience in optical testing, with a strong focus on passive components for telecom and data center applications.
  • Intimate knowledge of the following optical metrics and their measurement techniques: IL, RL, WDL, PDL, CD, DGD, GDR, and MPI.
  • Demonstrated expertise in referencing and calibration procedures for optical test equipment.
  • Proven ability to design test plans, evaluate equipment, and manage a small team.
  • Experience creating detailed datasheets and technical reports.
  • Hands-on experience with a variety of optical test equipment, such as Optical Spectrum Analyzers (OSA), tunable lasers, power meters, polarization synthesizers, as well as OTDR/OFDR/OCCR and detailed phase measurement techniques.

Preferred Skills
  • Experience with test automation and scripting (e.g., Python, LabVIEW, etc.).
  • Familiarity with industry standards (e.g., Telcordia GR-1209, GR-1221, GR-2866).
  • Direct product experience testing specific components like DWDM filters, Mux/Demux, circulators, couplers, switches, etc.
  • Experience with statistical analysis of large data sets for yield and performance characterization.
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to clearly present technical findings to both experts and non-experts.
