Responsibilities: Key responsibilities include analyzing and modifying COBOL programs, updating system layouts, conducting unit testing, collaborating with teams, and documenting technical changes.
Skills: Required skills include proficiency in COBOL, CICS, DB2 and JCL, with knowledge of automated testing tools and experience in Agile or Kanban environments being a plus.
Qualifications: A Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science and a minimum of 5 years of mainframe development experience are preferred.
Location: This remote role is based in Nebraska, United States.
Compensation: $90 - $95 / Hourly

We are seeking experienced Mainframe Developers to support state workforce agency’s initiative to expand Unemployment Insurance (UI) Account Numbers from 6 to 9 digits. This role involves modifying legacy COBOL applications, CICS screens, DB2 schemas, and batch jobs to accommodate the expanded field size, ensuring seamless integration across systems and minimal disruption to operations.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
Pay Rate: This is a contract position contingent upon project needs, with a compensation range of $90-95 per hour. Please note that this role is not eligible for Nelnet’s benefits package.
EDUCATION:
Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science
EXPERIENCE:
COBOL (batch and online)
CICS (transaction processing and web services)
DB2 (SQL, stored procedures, schema updates)
JCL (Job Control Language)
VSAM, GDG, and flat file handling
REXX Scripting (desired, not required)
COMPETENCIES – SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE/ABILITIES:
· Attention to detail and strong analytical skills.
· Excellent documentation and communication abilities.
· Experience working in Agile or Kanban environments.
· Ability to collaborate with internal and external stakeholders, including agency developers.
· Commitment to secure coding practices and regulatory compliance.
· Prior experience with government or public sector modernization projects is a plus.
