Civil Engineer I/II

The Civil Engineer I/II plays a key role in the planning, design, and delivery of roadway infrastructure projects, with a focus on Phase I and Phase II design and plan preparation for IDOT, Illinois Tollway, Cook County, CDOT, and other local agencies. This individual will apply strong technical expertise and engineering judgment to develop high-quality roadway plans and specifications while ensuring compliance with agency standards and requirements.

In this role, the Civil Engineer I/II will work collaboratively across multiple disciplines within Milhouse, coordinating with structural, environmental, and traffic engineering teams, as well as external sub-consultants, to deliver integrated and innovative design solutions. They will actively support project managers in meeting deadlines, maintaining budgets, and ensuring the successful execution of projects of varying scale and complexity.

The Civil Engineer I/II will also contribute to client relationship management by assisting with technical communication, responding to inquiries, and providing updates throughout project lifecycles. With a proactive and detail-oriented approach, this role offers the opportunity to work on impactful transportation projects that improve mobility, enhance safety, and support community growth.

• Assist in the preparation of design plans, calculations, and cost estimates for IDOT Phase I and Phase II transportation projects
• Perform basic engineering tasks related to roadway geometry, grading, drainage, and traffic control under the guidance of senior staff
• Use engineering software such as CADD to produce drawings and models
• Data entry into various platforms  
• Help ensure all design work complies with IDOT standards, manuals, and procedures
• Coordinate with internal project team members and assist with project organization and file management
• Conduct site visits and assist in collecting field data, performing quantity takeoffs, and reviewing existing conditions

• Working knowledge of AutoCAD and/or Microstation 
• Willingness to learn, take initiative, and contribute to a team-oriented work environment 
• Excellent verbal and written communications skills  
• Analytical and problem solving skills  
• Experienced with 3D Modeling  
• Roadway design experience  
• Proven design experience with IDOT, Illinois tollway, Open roads and Traffic signals   

• Four-year bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from an ABET accredited institution 
• 0-4 years of experience as a Civil Engineer dedicated to transportation   
• Engineer in Training (EIT) license or ability to obtain within 12 months of hire
