Overview

Build the Future

At McGraw Hill, we are dedicated to delivering digital learning experiences that transform education for learners and educators. Our focus is on creating seamless, impactful products that truly benefit our users while supporting growth and collaboration across teams. We foster a culture that values innovation, teamwork, and a balance between career growth and personal well-being.

How can you make an impact?

The Principal Academic Designer, MLL, has broad expertise in MLL pedagogy and related areas, including fluency in Spanish, with strong experience in PK-12 curriculum development. The person will be a proactive advocate of the mission of MLL at McGraw Hill to provide vision, build networks, exert influence, teach and train, and support innovation. The person brings a strong MLL mindset and understanding of what goes into quality MLL materials in the context of our markets, program plans, and instructional models.

The MLL Lead will work with the VP, Academic Design Center of Excellence, and McGraw Hill School Learning Design leadership to stand up a functional Center of Excellence to define and promote best practices, standards, and innovation in designing PK-12 curriculum materials that effectively support multilingual learners. This person is willing and enthusiastic about the opportunity to share their expertise with others; catalogue their knowledge and expertise for access by others; substantially contribute to the development of informational and training materials; and actively remain updated on current and emerging trends and networks with thought leaders and practitioners in this area.

This role is someone who can keep abreast of the research and evolving standards and lead us to convert it into usable practice. This person can develop partnerships with outside organizations, lead advisory groups, and provide support to development teams across disciplines in crafting their MLL plan and story.

This is a remote role based in the US.

What you will do:

  • Ensure that our School MLL strategy remains leading edge and a differentiator in the market.
  • Build and maintain resident expertise in MLL needs and pedagogy, including related facets of MLL (e.g., ELD, Dual Language, translations, etc.).
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to update, articulate, and share strategy and documentation for implementation across all content areas PK-12; support internal/external communication, including for portfolio design teams, professional learning, marketing, and sales.
  • Provide research support for MLL strategy and pedagogical design. Refresh our background research and Guiding Principles.

Build Networks

  • Build and provide leadership for a “community of practice” among MLL SMEs and other key stakeholders within the organization as contributors to a company point of view, strategy, and plan.
  • Analyze and compile external HQIM review criteria related to MLL support.
  • Cultivate partnerships with outside organizations to support our development and help position us in the industry.
  • Build strong relationships and stay closely connected with customers and organizations to ensure well-rounded perspectives and drive our priorities.

Support Innovation and Development

  • Work with program teams – particularly those without resident SMEs – to ensure work is aligned with curriculum requirements, state standards, and program content. Support the work of mapping and correlations as needed to demonstrate full alignment.
  • Help program teams concept, plan, and develop MLL instructional elements, both digital and print.
  • Support and build onto our pool of outside vendors and freelancers who have MLL expertise, such as by providing guidance or evaluations.
  • Work with product teams, Marketing, and Product Design to provide input on labeling and branding in alignment with our overall goals.
  • Provide input for project funding proposals.
  • Review current development practices and recommend any operational improvements.

Teach and Train

  • Provide training materials, guidance, and support for teams who are creating our products or telling our story.
  • Support the development of customer-facing professional learning content.

What you bring:

  • Bachelor's degree, advanced degree in Education preferred.
  • 8+ years in ELL/MLL or related PK-12 curriculum development.
  • Spanish language fluency.
  • Strong background in education – research and practice; experience with standards-based curriculum development.
  • Familiarity with current research in MLL principles and practice; ability to understand and synthesize educational research.
  • Willingness to explore, forge, and/or nurture partnerships with thought leaders and organizations.
  • Ability to engage with key internal and external stakeholders.
  • Ability to work with program/portfolio teams as an influencer outside the chain of command; ability to effectively communicate points of view from a shared service perspective (influence vs authority).
