Director, Shared Financial Services

Make-A-Wish is the world’s largest wish-granting organization, uniting communities to grant life-changing wishes for eligible children. The Director, Shared Financial Services will lead a distributed team delivering accounting, reporting, internal controls, budgeting, and financial management services to chapters that elect shared services, ensuring compliance with U.S. GAAP and organizational policies while driving process improvements and strong analytics.

Skills

  • Strong nonprofit accounting knowledge and U.S. GAAP experience.
  • Experience with financial statement preparation, external audits, and Form 990s.
  • Proven leadership and people-management skills for large distributed teams.
  • Hands-on experience with NetSuite, Salesforce, and advanced Excel.
  • Ability to design and maintain internal controls and document policies and procedures.
  • Project management skills for end-to-end implementation of process and system improvements.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and presentation skills with cross-functional influence capability.
  • High level of confidentiality, ethics, and professional judgment.

Responsibilities

  • Define and drive the vision, strategy, goals, and organizational design for Shared Financial Services.
  • Recruit, train, lead and coach a team of 25+ accounting professionals to deliver high-quality shared services.
  • Oversee preparation and delivery of monthly and annual financial statements for participating chapters, ensuring accuracy and U.S. GAAP compliance.
  • Manage internal controls, policy documentation, and business process development to strengthen controls and compliance.
  • Coordinate and manage external audits and prepare participating chapters’ Form 990 and applicable state tax filings.
  • Partner with cross-functional stakeholders to support ERP and CRM integrations and enhancements (NetSuite, Salesforce).
  • Lead budgeting, forecasting, financial analysis, and productivity/cost-savings initiatives for participating chapters.
  • Research and advise on complex accounting, tax, and regulatory issues; serve as a business partner to chapters and Finance leadership.

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or related field required.
  • CPA credential preferred.
  • Familiarity with nonprofit accounting standards and tax filings.
