Overview

Lynker Corporation, in strategic partnership with Fisheries Immersed Science Hawaii (FISH) as the FLOAT – the "FISH" and "Lynker" Ocean Alliance Team Joint Venture, is seeking motivated Field Technician (Small Boat/Aerial Operations) to join interdisciplinary field teams on vessel-, small boat-, and aerial-based research surveys for NOAA’s ProTech Fisheries 2.0 program. Employment in this role is contingent upon FLOAT being awarded the contract by NOAA.

  • Participate directly in small boat-, shore-, and/or aerial-based surveys supporting the collection of biological, ecological, and environmental data.
  • Operate or support the operation, trailering, launch, retrieval, and field maintenance of small vessels and related gear, ensuring all NOAA and USCG compliance standards are met.
  • Assist in all aspects of aquatic/marine animal surveys, including animal handling, tag deployment, tissue or water sampling, and operation of net or eDNA collection gear, in accordance with approved scientific protocols.
  • Support deployment and operation of drones/uncrewed aerial systems (UAS) for photogrammetry, video surveys, or data collection, if trained and certified.
  • Collect and accurately log environmental and survey data; maintain and organize field notes, photographs, and digital records per QA/QC standards.
  • Conduct daily equipment preparation, troubleshooting, maintenance, and field calibration; ensure proper gear stowage and safe working conditions.
  • Support field safety procedures, participate in daily safety briefings, and assist in response to emergencies as directed.
  • Contribute to logistics support, including preparation of supplies, coordination of travel/housing, and communication with team leads and Survey Leaders.
  • Prepare and contribute to summary field reports and project documentation.

Required:

  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in biology, marine science, environmental science, or a closely related technical field.
  • Demonstrated experience with small boat operations, animal handling, environmental or marine field data collection, and related equipment.
  • Willingness and fitness to participate in extended field assignments at sea or in remote areas, under varying and challenging environmental conditions.
  • Strong attention to detail, commitment to safety, and ability to adhere to field protocols and compliance standards.
  • Must meet all NOAA/government medical, safety, and security requirements for field deployments (may include background checks, drug testing, and certifications).
  • Ability to work well in a multidisciplinary team, maintain effective communication, and adapt to rapidly changing operational requirements.

Preferred:

  • Technician-level certifications in vessel operation (e.g., NOAA/USCG MOCC), drone piloting (FAA Part 107), or advanced field sampling/processing (e.g., eDNA or UAS data acquisition).
  • Experience operating or maintaining drones/UAS, scientific field sensors, or advanced lab equipment.
  • Prior work with NOAA, BOEM, or other federal/state research programs in a field team/technician capacity.

Work Environment:

Frequent travel and irregular hours required. Assignments may involve deployment for several weeks at sea, outdoors, or in remote/rural field sites. Physical stamina and compliance with all field safety and operational procedures are essential.
