Quality-Commissioning Engineer

About Us

Highland Electric Fleets’ electrification-as-a-service (EaaS) model aims to make electric school buses and other clean heavy duty vehicles attainable for every district across the US and Canada. Our turnkey solution tackles financing, vehicle procurement, infrastructure upgrade and maintenance to create a reliable and affordable fleet for our customers.

Summary:

As a Quality-Commissioning Engineer, you will play a pivotal role in guiding Highland’s customer deployments through the critical go-live phase, where newly delivered vehicles and charging infrastructure must align seamlessly to meet commercial operations dates.

You will coordinate with OEM dealers, Highland technicians, and construction partners to ensure vehicles pass through pre-delivery inspections, chargers are fully commissioned, and all identified issues are tracked to timely resolution.

This role ensures every asset is validated, repaired if needed, and fully operational prior to handoff to the customer. Beginning as a team of one, you will build the processes, standards, and foundation for a future commissioning team, while also contributing to Highland’s broader maintenance quality initiatives by applying best practices that uphold fleet condition and reliability.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Oversee and coordinate the commissioning process for both vehicles and chargers, ensuring readiness for customer go-live.
  • Track and confirm vehicle deliveries to designated dealer entities, monitoring pre-delivery inspection (PDI) progress and outcomes.
  • Facilitate communication with dealers to ensure efficient resolution of defects found during PDI and timely completion of repairs prior to customer delivery.
  • Conduct or oversee Highland’s own pre-delivery inspections when needed, ensuring all defects are documented, tracked, and escalated as necessary.
  • Validate charging infrastructure activation by confirming that chargers are properly commissioned, inspected, and free of operational defects before customer use.
  • Serve as the primary liaison between construction teams, OEM dealers, Highland field technicians, and customers during the go-live process to ensure alignment on timing and quality.
  • Develop and manage a commissioning quality checklist, ensuring all vehicles, chargers, and systems meet operational and safety standards by cutover.
  • Troubleshoot and document commissioning issues, root causes, and resolution strategies, building a knowledge base to support continuous improvement for future deployments.
  • Contribute to Highland’s broader maintenance quality initiatives by applying best practices that uphold fleet condition and reliability across operations.
  • Parachute in as needed to assist in the facilitation or administration of repairs in critically identified areas, ensuring timely resolution and minimal customer disruption.
  • Provide regular updates to internal teams and leadership on commissioning status, risks, and resolution progress, enabling proactive decision-making.
  • Establish initial workflows, standards, and training materials in preparation for growing a team of commissioning technicians under this role.

Qualifications:
  • 5+ years of experience in fleet, EVSE, or related technical commissioning, quality assurance, or field engineering.
  • Understanding of Enterprise Asset Management Systems for work generating and documentation
  • Strong knowledge of vehicle service operations, dealer networks, and pre-delivery inspection processes.
  • Familiarity with EV charging systems (AC and DC fast charging), OCPP infrastructure, and site-level commissioning activities.
  • Hands-on experience troubleshooting or validating both vehicle and charging hardware/software systems preferred.
  • Proven ability to coordinate with cross-functional teams (dealers, OEMs, construction partners, technicians, and customers) to drive timely issue resolution.
  • Ability to distill technical data into clear updates for both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Strong problem-solving mindset with demonstrated ability to make sound technical and operational decisions.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, or related technical field preferred; equivalent technical field experience considered.
