Student Research Assistant - FIPR Institute

   

JOB DESCRIPTION SUMMARY

  

This position is located at Florida Industrial & Phosphate Research Institute located at 1855 W. Main Street, Bartow, FL 33830.

The FIPR Institute is seeking an undergraduate student research assistant within Florida Polytechnic University for laboratory work on a grant-supported project by the Critical Materials Innovation (CMI) Hub (formerly Critical Materials Institute). The CMI project is designed to recover rare earth elements (REE) from phosphogypsum (PG), produce alternative fertilizers, develop low-carbon cement, and purify PG for various commercial applications. Students with some training in environmental engineering and chemistry are preferred.

    

JOB DESCRIPTION

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

  • Sample preparation - crushing, pulverizing and measuring for chemical analysis
  • Operation of analytical tools such as pH meter and ion probes
  • Acid digestion of solid and liquid samples for chemical analysis
  • Data recording
  • Glassware cleaning for chemical analysis and general lab cleaning.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Ability to work effectively independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to complete detailed work in a timely fashion.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with a diverse population.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of relevant course content.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must have a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Current students: Must have a cumulative GPA of at least 2.25 and successfully completed 9 credits or more in the most recent semester with a GPA of at least 2.0.
  • Must be enrolled at least half-time.
  • Must be currently enrolled or attending classes at Florida Polytechnic University.

REQUIRED LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS, AND/OR OTHER SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS OF LAW:

  • This position requires a criminal background check.
  • This position is subject to federal and state privacy regulations.

NORMAL WORK SCHEDULE: A student worker is limited to a maximum of 20 work hours per week while classes are in session. During semester breaks and summer term, a student worker is limited to a maximum of 32 work hours per week on an as-needed basis.

EXPECTED STARTING SALARY: $14.25 hourly.
