Staff Embedded Systems Test Engineer

Who is Flock?

Flock Safety is an all-in-one technology solution to eliminate crime and keep communities safe. Our intelligent platform combines the power of communities at scale - including cities, businesses, schools, and law enforcement agencies - to shape a safer future together. Our full-service, maintenance-free technology solution is trusted by communities across the country to help solve and deter crime in the pursuit of safer communities for everyone.

Our holistic public safety platform is comprehensive and intelligent, providing the actionable evidence needed to solve, deter and reduce crime across neighborhoods, schools, businesses and entire cities. Without compromising transparency or privacy, we are turning unbiased data into objective answers.

Flock strives to offer a career-defining experience where you can also make an impact on your community. While safety is a serious business, we are a supportive team that is optimizing the remote experience to create strong and fulfilling relationships even when we are physically apart. Our group of hard-working employees thrive in a positive and inclusive environment, where a bias towards action is rewarded.

We have raised over $700M in venture capital from investors including Tiger Global, Andreessen Horowitz, Matrix Partners, Bedrock Capital, Meritech Capital Partners, and Initialized Capital. Now surpassing a $7.5B valuation, Flock is scaling intentionally and seeking the best and brightest to help us meet our goal of reducing crime in the United States by 25% in the next three years.

The Opportunity

Imagine owning the entire automated testing landscape for innovative embedded systems that directly combat crime and make communities safer. At Flock, we're looking for a Staff Embedded Systems Test Engineer to design, implement, and manage the critical infrastructure that guarantees our devices are reliable, performant, and scalable. You'll validate everything from low-level firmware to complex physical interactions. If you're passionate about moving fast, solving tough challenges, and ensuring top-tier quality in a dynamic environment where you can bridge the gap between prototype and production, this is your opportunity to lead our Device Software Quality efforts. You will design, implement, and manage the infrastructure that validates the software on our embedded products, from bare-metal firmware to interactions with the physical world. This role will be a professional generalist who is able to walk the line between scrappy prototype and production polish.

The Skillset

We are looking for people who:

  • Have a Masters or Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field with 8+ years of experience in QA and test automation.

  • Have hands-on embedded electronics prototyping experience

  • Possess deep expertise in developing and maintaining automated test frameworks for embedded systems.

  • Are comfortable interacting with code in multiple languages to create, validate, and profile embedded devices

  • Are comfortable working cross-functionally across multiple projects

  • Have experience with Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) and Software-in-the-Loop (SIL) testing

  • Have experience commercializing electronic hardware in the consumer or industrial IoT space

  • Can read schematics and PCB layouts to inform test strategies and aid in debugging

  • Have experience with test case management tools (e.g., TestRail, Zephyr) and bug tracking systems (e.g., Jira).

  • Have a healthy skepticism of and trust-but-verify relationship with abstraction layers

  • Possess effective verbal and written communication skills

  • Have humility, curiosity, and a passion for sharing knowledge

The ideal candidate will be comfortable:

  • Acting as the glue between embedded hardware, software, and program management

  • With bare metal and RTOS code on MCUs

  • Translating product goals into technical requirements

  • Prototyping and triaging issues on embedded Android and MCU systems

  • Interacting with a variety of programming and scripting languages (C, Python, SQL, Kotlin, Matlab, Java, Bash)

  • With CI/CD pipelines (e.g., Jenkins, GitLab CI) for automated testing of physical hardware.

Please note: this position will require quarterly travel to our Atlanta HQ lab or other test lab locations in the continental US.

Feeling uneasy that you haven’t ticked every box? That’s okay; we’ve felt that way too. Studies have shown women and minorities are less likely to apply unless they meet all qualifications. We encourage you to break the status quo and apply to roles that would make you excited to come to work every day.

The First 60 Days

  • Create performance profiling dashboards and reports, hardware design guides, application notes, and other relevant technical collaterals

90 Days & Beyond
