Job Description

Dewberry Engineers Inc. (Dewberry) invites applications for a full-time, Senior Architectural Historian position within our national cultural resources practice group. This position can be staffed in a Dewberry office location, may be fully remote or hybrid.  The qualified candidate must meet the Secretary of the Interior’s (SOI) standards for Architectural History. Candidates will demonstrate at least 15 years of professional experience conducting historic architectural surveys in a particular state with the Department of Transportation. Familiarity and proficiency with federal, state and local regulations and review agencies is required, including Section 106 and 110 of the National Historic Preservation Act and state regulations as applicable.

 

This is a remote position based out of Parsippany, NJ.

Dewberry offers a comprehensive and very competitive package of insurance programs to regular full-time employees and their eligible dependents the first of the month following their date of hire. The insurance package includes medical, dental, vision, and supplemental life. Additional insurances, at no cost to the employee: life (employee only), accidental death and dismemberment, business travel and accident, and short- and long-term disability are also provided. Employees pay a share of Dewberry’s premium expenses (on a pre-tax basis) for medical and dental insurance plans.

Positions within our officer program are also eligible for an annual bonus and monthly stipend.  Both vary based on level within the program and bonuses are dependent upon company and individual performance. Certain positions are also eligible to receive overtime pay, whereas all non-exempt positions are eligible for overtime (subject to approval).

Responsibilities

  • Establish Area of Potential Effects (APE). Physical field inspections of APEs will be required.
  • Complete Section 106 consultation with State Historic Preservation Officers while working with senior cultural resource staff.
  • Drafting agreement document (MOA/PA).
  • Serving as Principal Investigator for architectural resource documentation and evaluation projects including oversight of Junior Staff (i.e. collecting field data).
  • Evaluating resources for NRHP eligibility and assessing effects as required under Section 106 of the NHPA and applicable state preservation laws.
  • Preparing technical reports for a variety of geographic locations under a range of regulatory contexts.
  • Document historic properties in accordance with Historic American Building Survey/Historic American Engineer Record/Historic American Landscapes Survey (HABS/HAER/HALS) standards and guidelines.
  • Solid knowledge base about the function and design of historic structures and a demonstrated ability to justify National Register eligibility determinations and assessments of effects in accordance with Section 106. This may include the preparation of historic structures research reports and the identification of appropriate treatment measures for affected historic structures.
  • Prepare written documents, including historic contexts, resource analysis, historic property inventory forms, and technical reports.
  • Ability to effectively coordinate with involved parties to make important decisions about project alternatives and the resolution of adverse effects to historic resources.
  • Work as an integral team member.

Required Skills & Required Experience

  • Possess a Master’s degree in historic preservation, architectural history, history, or closely related field, with coursework in American architectural history;
  • Demonstrate at least 15 years of full-time experience in research, writing, or teaching in American architectural history or at least 15 years of full-time professional experience on historic preservation projects. Experience shall include detailed investigations of historic structures, preparation of historic structures research reports, and preparation of plans and specifications for preservation projects.
  • Demonstrate concise technical writing skills.
  • Meet the Secretary of the Interior’s Qualification Standards as an Historian and Architectural Historian.
  • Demonstrated business development track record.
  • Minimum 15 years related experience -- conducting historic-age architecture surveys for regulatory compliance (including data gathering and photography).

Salary Range

The projected range for this position is $114,000-$147,000 annually in our Parsippany, NJ office. Depending upon other factors, i.e., skills, experience, location, market conditions, the range may vary slightly.
