Run experiments consistently to learn about product behavior. Example: Duolingo learned that the most important metric to optimize for was whether people were coming back in 3 days
Strong programming skills in Python and SQL
Experience designing and building data pipelines and ETL systems
Familiarity with data warehousing (we're considering BigQuery)
Comfort with cloud infrastructure (we use AWS)
Proven ability to build scalable, production-ready data systems
Experience creating clear, actionable reports and dashboards for internal decision-making
Solid understanding of data modeling, schema design, and best practices around reliability and observability
Experience with distributed data processing (e.g. Apache Spark)
Familiarity with Kafka or event-driven architectures
Exposure to basic data science or analytics workstreams

Previous zero-to-one data infrastructure experience at a high-growth startup
